Mother Writes Lovely Blog About her Preemie

Every once in a while, it is nice to read a lovely blog that a mother has written about her child. There is a blog called Micro-Preemie to Miracle that mom Sarah Bollinger started about her son, Everett, who was born at 15 weeks premature. He’s come a long way! I always find stories about preemies to be very interesting. There is something fascinating about the story of a teeny, tiny, baby that struggles to grow and thrive. Often, their stories are uplifting and inspiring. It is nice to read something positive! Last December, I wrote about a preemie named … Continue reading

Organize the Clutter Before Christmas

Christmas and clutter seem to go together. There are the boxes of decorations that we take out of closets, basements, garages and attics. There are the extra toys and other presents we need to make room for in our homes. There are even extra food supplies that may overstuff our refrigerators and pantries. Because I get overwhelmed with clutter (although I’m not always very good at keeping it at bay), my first instinct is to run out to the store and fill the cart with all sorts of new organizers to wrestle the clutter away. Did you know that there … Continue reading

The Challenge of Winter Break

It is holiday vacation time, and if you are like many home – based professionals, that means that your children are out of school or home from college. Chances are that you still have at least some work to do. The challenge of holiday vacation is similar to that of spring break and summer vacation, and it has two parts. The first is how to spend enough quality time with your children while still getting some work done, and the second is how to find fun, age appropriate things for your children to do independently or while in the care … Continue reading

Merry Christmas, Home Based Professionals

Merry Christmas, fellow home based professionals. I have the perfect gift to give all of you today. I am giving you the gift of the day off. Of course, if you do not celebrate Christmas or you are Santa you may not be able to take this day off. So, take tomorrow off. But for those home based professionals who have the Christmas goose cooking in the oven, stockings hung by the chimney with care, sugar plums dancing in their heads, and small children with begging eyes waiting to open gifts, take the day off. It is hard for a … Continue reading

An Opportunity to Show Love at Christmas

One day a couple of weeks ago, I had just about had it with my kids. There was one fight to break up after another. When things had degenerated into name calling (although I had to admit that it was hard not to laugh when one of my sons called the other “Mr. Stinky Head Romans) I knew it was time to take some serious action. I called the kids together and told them that I had an idea that I needed their help with. I wanted to create a crib for the Baby Jesus that was soft and warm, … Continue reading

Homemade Holiday Decorations for the Craft-Challenged

I am no Martha Stewart, but that doesn’t stop me from having fun tackling artsy holiday projects to display during this magical time of the year. Shortly after Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old and I took on a candy cane craft project we first saw hanging at a Ben Franklin store. Nearly three weeks later we are finally done putting together the seasonal showpiece. Okay, it didn’t really take us three full weeks to craft the minty, blinged out wreath. It just seems that way. Truth be told, you could easily construct the sweet masterpiece in a single afternoon. Here’s what you … Continue reading

The Christmas Homeschool

Before you can count the twelve days of Christmas it will be time to trim the tree and count eight tiny reindeer. Christmas is a busy time for all so many homeschoolers take time off in the month of December. Some take the entire month off. I find that the more time I take off the more chaotic my home gets. The kids need something to do and some structure in their day. For me, December is busy but if I took the entire month off I would go crazy. Here are some ideas to keep Christmas the focus, get … Continue reading

Scrapbook Challenges

What is the most difficult part of putting together a scrapbook layout? For some it’s finding just the right photos to tell a story. Others struggle to keep embellishments from taking over a design, while still others find it challenging to mix and match different scrapbook paper. For me, one of the toughest parts of creating a memorable page design is coming up with a really amazing title. In my opinion, page titles are an essential part of a layout. While some opt to skip titles all together, I think they make layouts so much easier to understand. After all, … Continue reading
