A Stitch in Time Saves Nine

"I'm going to do it in a little while," I said, meaning every word. I had every intention of sewing up a tiny tear in my youngest daughter's down comforter. It's her favorite cozy cover and I can't blame her. Down comforters are wonderfully warm, soft, and snuggly.

"Don't forget, Mom," she said. Famous last words.

Who me? Forget something?

Needless to say, I got busy and forgot. I have no excuse. Then, it warmed up again and the big blanket wasn't needed, so it made its way to the top of my sewing basket, which at one time was the dreaded mending pile. Some items that have landed there were never seen again, I'm sorry to say. That's because whomever owned them outgrew them before I repaired them; I felt so guilty that I quickly sewed them up and smuggled them off to charity before anyone found out.

That's my confession.

While such episodes were rare, the idea was troublesome enough that I was determined not to let such things happen in the future. I began mending each item soon after learning something needed repair and I no longer have a mending pile.

But... I forgot about the comforter. Trusting that I had fixed it as promised, my daughter recovered it from my room while I was out shopping and she snuggled in to watch TV. When I came home, imagine my surprise when I found feathers all over the living room.

Had I sewn it immediately, it would have never grown to be a full fledged hole. Because I didn't do so, it required a bit more work and I ended up feeling guilty (and cleaning up feathers).

I had heard "A stitch in time saves nine," many times, but I learned just how true it is.

My name is Sherry, and I'm a recovering procrastinator.
