Temple Open House In Brigham City- Part II

My little family made it to the open house last night. It was fun to get to go on a little short trip and show them something so meaningful. As we were driving there, I could tell my kids were excited. As we made our exit off of the freeway, the temple spires were in the distance and we pointed it out to the kids. It was a beautiful sight at this time of year to see those white spires against the brown mountains behind it. When we got there, we had to be shuttled in to the temple grounds … Continue reading

Avoid Auto Insurance Claims On Halloween

There are dangers that are present on Halloween night that drivers will not face any other time of the year. You can expect to encounter more pedestrians than usual. There may be some inebriated drivers. This year, some states may have to deal with snow. Stay focused, and you can avoid some auto insurance claims this Halloween. There is something about Halloween that makes a lot of people throw all caution to the wind. Between the trick-or-treaters who are riding a sugar rush from eating too much Halloween candy, and the drunken revelers that appear in bars, there is great … Continue reading

The Recession is Over … Really?

Hey, everyone! The recession in the economy ended last year. Isn’t that great? I think it’s awesome! We’re not poor anymore. Um … really? Click here to check out a chart from SentierResearch. It’s okay … click … I’ll wait for you. See that red line? How it plummeted down there at the end? That represents the average American income. And did you see the black line, the one that rose? That was the unemployment rate. I’m not so sure that the recession is really over. But then I’m led to wonder something else. The numbers on the graph may … Continue reading

The Swiss Cheese House

We have been in the middle of some renovation for the last couple of weeks now. Our goal is to get the house tightened down, insulated and warm. Air infiltration has been a big problem in our home. You know the old saying, “Close the door, you don’t want to heat the whole neighborhood?” Well, even with the door closed, that is exactly what we have been doing. Yesterday, we reached completion on most of the energy efficiency stuff in our home. This included attic insulation, insulation of the attic above the garage (which influences the family room next to … Continue reading

Parents: There’s Power in Numbers

Subtitle: Katy Gets Kicked Off “Sesame Street” Last week I shared my enthusiasm for Sesame Street’s latest round of celebrity guests. Among them my childhood crush, Jason (yes, I think he’s hot) Bateman, Colin Farrell and Katy Perry. An eclectic mix for sure. Well, it was. For all of you moms and dads who have been living under a… mountain of dirty laundry, dishes and your kids’ strewn toys, I’ve got some bad or good news: Katy Perry will no longer be joining Elmo in the hood. Thanks to parental outrage that took the form of letter campaigns, emails and … Continue reading

What’s the Spookiest Thing That’s Happened to You on Halloween?

Happy Halloween! I don’t know if it’s the kid in me or what, but Halloween remains one of my favorite holidays. I love decorating and dressing up even though I don’t have any kids and some may think I’m too old for such nonsense. But I don’t care. I still think it’s a hoot. However, this Halloween, even though the decorations are up, I find myself facing something very scary indeed. A trip to the doctor. Dreading the Doctor After having to schlep my mom to and from doctors’ offices this past year, I’ve semi-sort of conquered one fear in … Continue reading

Starry Nights, Spooky Blog Tours, and Dachshunds: An Interview with Author Christine Verstraete

This next interviewee’s name may look familiar to you since I’ve interviewed Christine Verstraete before. Last time it was about her miniature doll hobby and the dogs she often includes in her displays. This time around I asked if she’d be interested in talking about Petey, the dachshund who stars in her new book, Searching For A Starry Night, A Miniature Art Mystery. She again graciously agreed, and added something fun just in time for Halloween: details on her spooky blog tour and how you can enter to win a set of Halloween minis or a copy of her e-book, … Continue reading

A Day All to Yourself?

Have you ever said, ‘I just want one day to myself?’ I thought that’s what I was going to have on Friday. Then Thursday night I found out our choir had a concert on Friday at one of the local nursing homes. ‘Oh no, I thought.’ After a crazy week including along with the usual housework and writing project, two other concerts, shopping, and a book launch I was organizing for GROW- UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS – an anthology edited by Anne Hamilton and Lyn Hurry and containing a number of Christian writers that included me, the last thing I … Continue reading

Home Prices Are Steeply Falling

How would you feel if you knew that your house was worth less now than it was eight years ago? If you live in Detroit or one of the other areas that have been the hardest hit by falling home prices, then this scenario could be reality. In truth, home prices fell their steepest rate ever since the Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller 20-city index has been keeping track of housing prices. The 10-city index, which has been keeping track of prices for 21 years, also showed the steepest decline in history. Overall, housing prices dropped 15.8 percent when compared to last … Continue reading

Home Product Recall: July 17, 2008

We all know about the massive toy recalls that have been in the news, of course. But there are many other recalls out there, including in home products. You might have a product that is deemed dangerous. Here are the current recalls involving home products, including furniture, outdoor items, health items and more. Outdoor Canopies Wanda Technology is recalling outdoor canopies that were sold exclusively at BJ’s wholesale club because they could pose a fire hazard to consumers. The 10 foot by 20 foot canopies were sold from January 2008 until about May 2008 for around $200. They are white … Continue reading
