Americana and Antiques

The Americana theme often injects traditional, rustic, antique, and country elements along with muted shades of red, white, and blue. These colors are usually toned down a bit from the vivid colors found in the American flag, and they are given an aged feel. Stars, stripes, and images that depict the entire flag are popular in this kind of setting, and anything that feels all American is game.

Denim is as American as apple pie and works perfectly in an Americana themed space. Pillows made from denim make adorable accents and look great against distressed furnishings. A bandanna, especially one with some age, will also make a great pillow.

Somewhat rustic or handmade wooden pieces add a touch of nostalgia. Roughly cut wooden stars with a worn looking finish add charm to an Americana theme. Antiques will fit right in bringing us back to another, simpler place and time. They remind us of our past and give a sense of cozy comfort. This is a great setting for other handmade items such as crocheted doilies, table runners, pillow covers, and throws.

A rag rug woven from faded red, white, and blue fabrics makes a perfect addition. A weathered looking white rocking chair with a throw draped over it also fits the space. Artwork should be simple.

Old signs are also cool. If you can't find one in an antique shop, you can paint one and distress it. Add a saying from the past or just make it say something patriotic. Distress other pieces and paint them with stars or stripes.

It's the simple touches that make the space feel homey and give it charm. Think about how much simpler things were in the past and try to choose pieces and accents that reflect that sentiment. Warmth is also important as with any design style, as adding warmth is what makes a house a home.
