Gymboree Play & Music

In March 2009, my mom suggested that Jessie would probably benefit from an activity with other children her age. What? Jessie doesn’t get enough interaction from watching me work at home? Mom’s suggestion was Gymboree. It sounded like a good idea to me. I looked up the website and found the location nearest to me. Oh my! The nearest location is about an hour away. That’s okay; we’ll just go try the class. Little did I know that I would love Gymboree. The jury was still out for Jessie, but enough parents told me that sitting and watching was common … Continue reading

If You Had A Thousand Dollars…

Fitness magazine recently polled readers and asked them what they would do if they had a thousand dollars to spend on fitness. Nearly half of the respondents would hand the money over to a personal trainer in order to get some motivation and personal attention for their workouts. Survey results included: 45% of respondents picked the personal trainer. 38% of respondents would buy a fancy piece of home gym equipment. 13% would take off on some sort of fitness adventure, like a hike or a mountain climb. 4% of respondents would use their thousand dollars to pay for a gym … Continue reading

Homeschool Co-ops

Homeschool Co-ops are one way where many parents are choosing to meet their children’s social and/or academic needs. Co-ops can range in anything from offering one or two classes to a full day with a complete schedule that has classes for everyone. If you’re home school group doesn’t have one, you can start one fairly easily. A Defined Purpose Good groups have a defined purpose. You can walk in or pick up a brochure and you’re immediately aware of what the purpose is. Sometimes the purpose is to have a social outlet. Sometimes it’s to trade expertise in a variety … Continue reading

London Calling: “Cheap, Cheap”

Who says you have to be a millionaire to travel to London during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games? While American gymnast Gabby Douglas’s individual all-around gold and Michael Phelps’s history-making performance in the pool have been priceless moments during the London Games, word has it that frugalistas can score huge travel deals to the host city before the Olympics end. Delta Vacations just announced a major summer sale on London vacation packages. One features a flight from New York to London plus hotel accommodations for just $2,200 per couple. The catch: The deal is only good for travel from August … Continue reading

Tips for Recycling Magazines

If there is one thing we get in this house, it is a ton of magazines each week. Hardly a day goes by when we don’t get one and most days it is more than one. Considering my love for pop culture, I have to have my weekly People, Entertainment Weekly, Star Magazine, and Enquirer plus I get Ladies Home Journal, Readers Digest and that’s not even taking into consideration the magazines my husband and son get! Call me old fashioned, but I still like my magazines in paper form rather than reading them online. I know it isn’t very … Continue reading

Toddler-sitting Teen Texts Herself Into Big Trouble

Thankfully, I have never had to pay anyone to watch my child. I was reminded of how grateful I am of this fact after hearing about the teen babysitter from Ohio, who decided she was sick of her job, and ditched her charges before their parents returned home. The kids are okay, their parents are livid, and the teen sitter is behind bars. Actually, 18-year-old Mia Kemper was released from jail on her own recognizance. Which is a good thing considering she would have probably had a hard time finding someone to bail her sorry behind out of the slammer … Continue reading

More Fitness Myth Busters

Apparently, big muscles aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. According to a new study, not only does exercise not boost metabolism as much as widely believed, but even more shocking, is the fact that increased muscle mass doesn’t speed up weight loss either. Researchers maintain that while a pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat — about seven to 10 calories a day versus two calories — most people don’t put on enough muscle to make much of a difference. “Building muscle is very difficult for most individuals because it requires heavy weight workouts and … Continue reading

High Tech Video Workouts

There are thousands of fitness videos on the market today from Denise Austin and Karen Voight to Mari Winsor and Crunch Fitness, but a new study shows that sales of exercise DVDs have declined in the last three years as more fitness buffs turn to the Internet to get buff. According to the study, an increasing number of exercisers are no longer purchasing a new fitness DVD each month. Rather they are streaming fitness videos from Netflix and other sources to their televisions and computer monitors. Among the most popular are online workouts from “The Biggest Loser’s” Jillian Michaels and … Continue reading

The Danger of MegaSchools

There is a dangerous trend recently toward megaschools, schools that contain a large number of students at one school, anywhere from 500 to 2,000 students in one building. My own school district is considering doing this with our elementary school, and it scares me to no end. Megaschools can be convenient for school districts for a few reasons. A flux of incoming students can lead to overcrowding, and creating a new megaschool would address the problem, leaving room for further expansion. It is also usually more coast effective to create and maintain one megaschool than it is to renovate and … Continue reading
