Homemade Holiday Decorations for the Craft-Challenged

I am no Martha Stewart, but that doesn’t stop me from having fun tackling artsy holiday projects to display during this magical time of the year. Shortly after Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old and I took on a candy cane craft project we first saw hanging at a Ben Franklin store. Nearly three weeks later we are finally done putting together the seasonal showpiece. Okay, it didn’t really take us three full weeks to craft the minty, blinged out wreath. It just seems that way. Truth be told, you could easily construct the sweet masterpiece in a single afternoon. Here’s what you … Continue reading

Are You “Martha Stewart Challenged”?

My friend is funny. She always says things that make me laugh. Her latest is her new habit of calling herself “Martha Stewart Challenged.” When she asked how I would like it if I was thus challenged, I replied, “Hey, who isn’t?” I’ve got nothing on Ms. Stewart. I just like decorating and finding new ways to do things around the house to keep from becoming bored (and boring). I don’t want to get to the point where the only things I have left to talk about with my husband are the best carpet cleaners for pet stains or just … Continue reading

Love Day Photo Projects

Don’t waste a photo like this. Family pictures that showcase love are ideal to feature in Valentine’s Day photo projects. Fortunately, you don’t have to channel Martha Stewart to create stunning works of art to present to your sweetheart on Love Day. If you are craft challenged, then simply select a slew of your favorite family photos and display them in a shadow box. All you have to do is attach a series of pictures to the back panel of the shadow box frame with acid-free glue, add a couple of embellishments or personal mementos with pushpins, and you’ve got … Continue reading

DIY crafts have seen a spike in popularity since the economy tanked and has yet to rebound completely. According to a new survey, an increasing number of homeowners are putting the brakes on buying new seasonal decorations, and instead are channeling their inner Martha Stewart, and making crafts on their own. Now that autumn has officially arrived, now is the time to see how creative you can get on a shoestring budget. If you are new to DIY crafts, you may be surprised by how much fun it can be to create your own decorations. And if the process doesn’t … Continue reading

The Reality of Homemaking

This month, I’m substituting in the Home category here at Families.com. As I sit here in my living room, I have to laugh. Me? Blog about the home? Let me draw you a picture. My computer desk is completely trashed—papers, pens, receipts, and books are piled everywhere. Behind me, the couch is stacked with clean laundry. Toys are scattered all across the floor. I’m not sure if the carpet needs to be vacuumed – I can’t see it. The dishes are done, but only courtesy of my husband. If he hadn’t done them, they’d be up to the ceiling. Yes, … Continue reading

Hollywood’s Richest Ladies

We all know they have money, but just how much do they really have? Here is a list of the richest women in show business: Oprah This one is a no brainer, but how much does the reigning queen of daytime television really have? Well, there is the 42 acre, $50 million dollar house in California, adjoining condo units in Atlanta (worth $1.5 million), Maui waterfront property worth $13 million, a Greenwich, Connecticut house worth $3.6 million (do you hate Oprah yet?), a $6 million dollar co-op in Chicago and a $1.5 million getaway in Aspen. She eats off expensive … Continue reading

The Cat and the Binder Clip

A friend told me about a segment on the Martha Stewart Show where an expert demonstrated different ways to get your pets to take pills. The thing I couldn’t believe was the expert using a binder clip on the scruff of the cat’s neck to immobilize her. It sounded harsh. It sounded painful. So I looked up the Martha Stewart Show website and looked for information from that particular episode. The recap had several different methods listed — but not the binder clip. The comments on the article (and on the episode) were a different story. More than one person … Continue reading

Letting Kids Decorate Their Way

We all have different tastes when it comes to decorating. Getting a parent and a child to agree on how the child’s room should be decorated is sometimes difficult. I tried as much as possible to enlist Tyler’s input on how he wanted his room redecorated and some of his ideas were pretty wild. Before Katrina I was actually beginning the process of switching my office with Tyler’s room because it was the bigger bedroom. Although he was just four at the time, I knew he would soon need more space and since I needed to remove the wall of … Continue reading
