Are You Ready to Work on Your Yard?by Sherry Holetzky | More from this Blogger 20 Feb 2007 09:16 AM I know I'm ready! It seems like every weekend so far, I have found an excuse not to do it. Some of them were pretty good excuses too. There were some issues with weather, and then mud from all the rain we've had, but it's starting to be milder now. I hope it stays this way. It was sunny and in the sixties yesterday. Despite some wind, it was a beautiful day. It's still early this morning, but it already looks like it's going to a nice day. If it stays like this through the weekend, I will definitely be doing yard work. Cleaning up Brush Sticks, twigs, leaves, and downed branches can create quite a mess. Clearing all this stuff and making a pile is a good start. In our area, we are allowed to burn brush. Do not attempt to do so unless you are sure it is allowed where you live. In many areas, a permit may even be required or you may need to call the fire department before you begin, so they are aware, in case they are needed. Also, check to make sure there isn't a "burn ban" the day you intend to burn, especially if it's dry or windy in your area. You can rack up some steep fines if you don't follow the rules, and it can be dangerous. Always have a hose available when burning. Clearing the Path Before you get the mower out, walk through your yard and make sure there are no rocks or other obstructions. For those with small lawns this may not be necessary, but if you have a large area to mow, it makes sense to look it over before you begin.
