Beating the Cold in My Home

This winter, the country has been seeing temperatures that are colder than normal. Even the sunny state of California has had a few days where temperatures have reached below freezing. Right now, much of the east cost is chilled with almost arctic temperatures. Although we got a little dusting of snow today that is pretty and picturesque, the low, low temperatures take away any of the quaintness of the scene and leave me wanting spring to arrive. Of course, there is still some more weeks of winter. I know that the temperatures have hit some lows when I go out … Continue reading

Listening for the Heartbeat

One of the best parts of a prenatal appointment, in my opinion, is getting to hear your baby’s heartbeat on the Doppler. I always looked forward to the rapid swoosh I would hear as my obstetrician rolled the Doppler over my gel smeared belly. Halfway through my pregnancy, some friends of ours lent us a stethoscope. For weeks upon weeks I was not able to hear a thing, unless you count the typical stomach gurgles. Then, one evening in my eighth or ninth month, I lay on my side and pressed the cold metal end of the stethoscope into my … Continue reading

When You Love Someone -Part 2

I’m back, continuing to tell you about our together day. While Mick and I were listening to the radio yesterday in the early evening, a caller rang in to pass on her Christmas message. She wanted to say Merry Christmas to her husband and said she ‘after 43 years married she loved him exactly as she did when she first met him.’ Later a man rang in. He’d been engaged 13 years. No, that’s not mistyped -13 years before he married his obviously patient woman. They’ve now been married 30 years. Then later a woman rang to say Merry Christmas … Continue reading

What’s the Spookiest Thing That’s Happened to You on Halloween?

Happy Halloween! I don’t know if it’s the kid in me or what, but Halloween remains one of my favorite holidays. I love decorating and dressing up even though I don’t have any kids and some may think I’m too old for such nonsense. But I don’t care. I still think it’s a hoot. However, this Halloween, even though the decorations are up, I find myself facing something very scary indeed. A trip to the doctor. Dreading the Doctor After having to schlep my mom to and from doctors’ offices this past year, I’ve semi-sort of conquered one fear in … Continue reading

Sinfully Sweet Halloween Candy Cakes

What’s your favorite Halloween candy? Butterfinger, Kit Kat, Milky Way, Snickers, Hershey Bars, Twix, M&Ms? I happen to love them all, which is why I try not to buy them in bulk to pass out on Halloween. The leftovers would kill my diet. If you plan to purchase enough Halloween candy for the entire neighborhood you might consider taking a note of the following recipes. They are ideal for using up any leftover Halloween chocolate you might have come November 1st. These Halloween Candy cakes are sweet, delicious and breathe new life into calories you’d probably consume anyway. BUTTERFINGER TORTE … Continue reading

National Banana Bread Day

Every once in awhile I like to blog on a silly food holiday. I don’t necessarily celebrate all my silly food holidays although I admit that if I can squeeze in some homeschooling along with cooking–I’m usually game. Sadly, I dropped the ball. Yesterday was National Banana Bread Day. But I was out doing the family’s shopping for the week. I completely neglected my e-mail informing me that February 23 is National Banana Bread Day. The reason this is a travesty is because it just so happens that I have the best banana bread recipe in the world. It’s one … Continue reading
