Bracing for the Winter Storm

While we didn’t exactly have a white Christmas this year, the weather is certainly making up for it today. We are battening down the hatches and waiting for what could be more than a foot of snow. Late morning, we decided to venture out to two different (by close) stores in search of winter coats that might be on sale after Christmas. We knew that the stores would probably be pretty empty. There was a light snow fall, but unlike the little bit of flurries yesterday, this one was starting to stick a bit. We didn’t find what we needed … Continue reading

Winter Storm Sanity Savers

It’s funny how Mother Nature tends to dictate a parent’s schedule. For example, I have a slew of family members living on the East Coast who are bracing for a major winter storm. Significant snow is predicted to make traveling a nightmare for residents in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. The storm has forced my cousin to cancel a business trip to Boston. Instead, she’ll spend the snow day trying to figure out how to keep her four kids entertained indoors. If you are looking for ways to keep the kiddos from contracting a severe case of cabin fever, … Continue reading

Snow Day

I was born and raised in Southern California. My family is in Southern California. I had no plans to ever leave Southern California and my family. My husband is also a Southern California native. He has a much smaller family and his parents had retired to Nevada before he and I met. He didn’t have the Southern California ties that I did and he wanted to move. He looked at his options and had to choose a location where he thought I’d move. He decided on Texas. His company had offices there and the weather seemed to be fairly similar … Continue reading

Parents Prepare for Snowmaggedon

The Southeast is still trying to dig out from the snow that paralyzed major cities and left travelers stranded from Georgia to North Carolina, and now the Northeast is preparing for another major winter storm that is set to clobber the region over the next 48 hours. If you are a parent of a school-age child, you are likely bracing for more than just a few hours of shoveling. Instead, you will have to adjust your work schedule to accommodate one, two, or possibly, three snow days. For many moms and dads, the thought of enduring a round of cabin … Continue reading

Baby Names–How Many is Too Many?

Once upon a time parents gave their children a first, middle and last name and called it a day. These days kids are lucky if they get off with monikers that take less a day to pronounce. Case in point: the latest round of celebrity babies born to some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Last week acting duo Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell welcomed fraternal twin daughters into the world. The bitty babies were bestowed the following gigantic names: Dolly Rebecca Rose O’Connell and Charlie Tamara Tulip O’Connell. But, the O’Connell twins are not the only Tinseltown tots embracing the four-name … Continue reading

Tips For Driving In Bad Weather

Earlier I told you that my family is bracing to deal with Hurricane Flossie. Make no mistake; hurricane and tornado season is here and for travelers that means making sure you have emergency plans for a natural disaster. That goes double for those of you who do a lot of driving across the Great Plains and the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. It’s important to know what to do if you forced to drive in severe weather. According to the AAA (and common sense), it’s always better to stay off the roads until inclement weather has passed. But if you absolutely … Continue reading
