Dangerous Cold Snap

I heard a report yesterday that said some parts of Minnesota are experiencing temperatures as low as 40 below zero! That's not the wind chill either, that's the actual temperature. On the news, a reporter showed how the "egg trick" can also be done in cold weather. Normally, they crack an egg on pavement to show how hot it is outdoors. This time, they cracked an egg and it froze completely within about 2 minutes. That's COLD!

Chicago is also experiencing a serious cold snap, as are several other areas. If excessively cold weather has hit your area, please be very careful. Sadly, people have already died due to extremely cold temperatures.

One good bit of advice is to avoid going outdoors unless it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive anywhere in extreme weather, be sure to bring along supplies in case of emergency. Frostbite, hypothermia, and many other dangers are present in this intense cold. Frostbite can occur in under half an hour in intense cold. Dress in warm layers and bring along extra clothing and blankets. Make sure your head, ears, feet, and hands are well protected.

If you lose power or your furnace cannot keep up with the cold, please seek a "warming center" in your area. In fact, you should find out where these centers are located before the need arises, so you'll be prepared if trouble arises. It's also good to be aware so you can instruct neighbors where to go if necessary. Speaking of neighbors, please check on infirm or elderly neighbors. Give them a call to see if they are all right. In many areas, the Department of Human Services will provide those in need with transportation to a safe location.

The only good thing about cold snaps like this is that they usually don't last too long. Please heed all weather warnings and advisories, take them seriously, and use caution during dangerous weather. Hopefully the cold snap will be over soon.
