Decorating Overkill

I thought I was organized but right now it looks like Christmas threw up in my living room. Traditionally the day after Thanksgiving we put up our trees. Yes I said trees, we have three, the big one in the front room and two smaller ones in the family room on each side of the fireplace. Three trees means lots of ornaments, not to mention my nutcracker collection for the mantel, the nativity sets that go on the book shelves and all the decorative boxes that get piled under the two smaller trees. I brought everything in from the garage … Continue reading

Continuing Traditions

The day after Thanksgiving is the day our tree goes up. Actually, we have three. I know it sounds like over kill but it’s really not. Going all out for Christmas decorating is one way I continue the traditions Hailey has enjoyed all her life. When I was married my ex husband really didn’t celebrate Christmas so I went overboard to make up for him. Now that I’m divorced, it’s a tradititon. Hailey always says it looks like Christmas exploded in our house, but I know she looks forward to it every year. If I tried to cut back on … Continue reading

Christmas Carols and the Home

In our house, when we are decorating the tree and putting Christmas decorations up, it is usually to the accompaniment of Christmas Carols. Similarly when I am in the writing Christmas card stage or the wrapping present mode I like to have accompanying carols to listen to and to sing along with. This year one of the special CDs that will be played in our house over Christmas is The Gift by Susan Boyle, a present given me by a dear friend. Why play carols when I am doing these tasks? For one thing it helps put me in the … Continue reading

Choosing a Christmas Tree

Choosing a Christmas tree sounds like a simple exercise, but sometimes it is not. First there is the decision about whether to have an artificial tree or a real tree. For me there is no contest. The real tree wins hands down. Yes, I know they drop pine needles and you have to get rid of the dead tree at the end of the Christmas period, but it is worth it for that smell of Christmas that comes in with the pine. Since we are in summer in Australia there’s no point buying a tree too early, even though the … Continue reading

A Simple New Idea

This year we have, thanks to my daughter who is the artistic one in the family, a new idea for our card tree. It’s just a simple change but it makes a lot of difference to the way the card tree looks. Every year the card tree goes up, so yesterday we took a walk and scouted round for some branches that had come off gum trees in recent storms. Eucalypts or gum trees are notorious for snapping apart, which is why I would never have one near the house. Come to think of it, I would never have a … Continue reading

Going, Going, Gone?

Going, going, gone – that’s the way it appears it is heading with Christmas at least as far as one pre-school is concerned. On the news this morning I heard about a pre-school that has decided to ignore Christmas. Not just the Christmas carols and religious content but even things like Santa and reindeer. They are aiming to have an end of year party but there will be no mention of Christmas in any way shape or form. Their reason is they don’t want to offend anyone. What about the people who are offended by them ignoring Christmas? On the … Continue reading
