Decorating Rut?

If you have the urge to make changes in your décor but can't seem to get motivated, maybe it's just a matter of not knowing where to start. A little inspiration can go a long way, so try to find something to get you going.

Inspiration and Designer Influence

Get Decorating is a cool site for home decorating inspiration, offering tens of thousands of photos of professionally decorated homes. Even if you don't love the entire room or home, you will likely to come across something that you find attractive. The way these spaces are designed may also help you pull things together in ways you never imagined.

It's Okay to be a Snob

Let me clarify. It's okay to be a little snobbish when it comes to shopping for items for your home. You should demand high quality and the best deal. Less expensive doesn't necessarily mean something is a better bargain. Even if you don't go top of the line, you can hold out for exceptional quality at a reasonable price. This may mean forgetting about a so-so chotchke here and there to fill in spaces, which can add up, and which isn't very inspiring anyway. Instead, save the money and use it to purchase one or two great items that you really love. You can use simple things like candles to fill space in the interim.

Keep it Simple

Sometimes people decide they don't enjoy decorating because it's difficult to translate the image in their minds into results. They work hard, spend money, and in the end, the space is not at all what they had in mind. The easiest way to avoid this phenomenon is to keep things simple. Cover the basics such as wall treatments, flooring, window treatments, and furniture arrangement, and keep accents and accessories simple at first. Look at the newly transformed room before adding too many accents, so you'll have a better vision for adding the perfect finishing touches.
