Decorating Trends

The way we decorate our homes says a lot about our personalities, but it also speaks to the mood we are trying to set. What kind of mood are you trying to create? Do you want subdued, soft, calming colors for a relaxing atmosphere or do you prefer hot colors that are more stimulating? Maybe you like both, just in different settings. You might like a bright, vivid kitchen but prefer tranquility in the bedroom or bath. Color helps us set any mood and create the feel we want to achieve because different colors stimulate different feelings.

The current trend is toward more natural colors. Gemstones, such as gold and blue topaz, diamond, and amethyst are represented as cool yet calming colors found in other areas of nature, such as the sky, water, and plants. Bold color choices represent the natural colors of flowers, such as deep reds, oranges, and yellows.

The current trends are said to inspire a move back toward comfort as a way of life. Replacing the starkness of ultra modern and minimalist designs are softer lines, a sense of nostalgia, and life affirming colors.

Time worn favorites are also reappearing. Designers have coined the terms "updated retro" and "updated vintage" to describe some of the new trends. Your great auntie's handmade quilt will work, but her wallpaper won't. Wallpaper is "in" but only in updated, fresher designs.

Despite retro inspired trends, when it comes to metallic finishes, bronze is the popular choice as opposed to the chrome elements of the past.

Handmade items and crafts (or items that appear handmade) are growing more popular as well, as people gravitate toward the personal, familiar, and comfortable. The key is to mix these items with updated elements, such as positioning needlepoint sampler pillows on a sleek sofa or a modern style chair.

Natural colors and an eclectic mix of old and new are the inspirations for making the home feel more comfortable and casual and are quickly replacing the sterile hotel suite feel.
