Deer in the House

Did you happen to see that story today about a deer jumping through someone's window and into their study? The homeowner, he lives in Michigan, simply opened the door so the deer, a six-point buck, could leave. While a deer crashing through a window and into someone's home is not that common, I have noticed that there has been a lot of deer activity lately.

Last year, we would be delighted if we would spot a deer or two off in the distance. This year, they practically knock on the door twice a day. Just looking out of my kitchen window or driving along in the neighborhood, we see several deer a day.

What is more, is that the deer seem to be getting quite close to the house. After a snowstorm, we found tracks leading right up to our front porch. And the deer are literally within spitting distance, as bold as you please, even when we are outside.

This year, I don't think our landscaping will recover from their munching. At least three bushes have been decimated, and by the way, they are the bushes that are closest to the house. In the backyard, there is more evidence of hungry deer. While we have two acres of woods in which they can scamper, they seem more interested in being right near the house itself. Without a care in the world, they will look up at me looking down on them and then go back to cleaning each other, and in some cases just laying down beneath a tree.

My neighbor says that all of this deer activity may be due to a cold winter this year. He himself has few visits from the deer, probably owing to the fact that he has three dogs that would delight in chasing deer off of the property.
