What Is the Smell in Your House?

Have you ever noticed that certain homes have their own smell? If you have a good nose, you might be able to tell within seconds of walking into a house, whether or not they own a dog. I think the only reason you may not be able to tell in my house is because we don’t have carpeting. However, sit on the couch and you might. Or get anywhere near my youngest son’s bedroom and you might smell his reptiles (two bearded dragons and a turtle). Open the door to my oldest son’s bedroom and well, let’s just say that … Continue reading

Cleaning Your House in Less Than 30 Minutes

Did you know that in less than 30 minutes a day you can clean your house? I’m not talking about a deep cleaning. I’m talking about a surface cleaning and then time spent focusing on one room or task. Let me give you an example of how I do this. Let’s take Mondays. On Mondays I concentrate my effort into cleaning the kitchen. But I also make a sweep through our other main rooms to get them in order. It really does take me less than 30 minutes. I start by sweeping the kitchen floor (1 minute) and then I … Continue reading

Three Tips for Staging your Home

Staging a home is much like setting a stage for a play. Instead of a play, you set the “stage” to sell your home. Some people don’t realize that it often takes a lot of effort to stage the home just right for an open house or a private showing. There are a few simple things anyone can do to make a home more appealing to the largest number of people. Try the following tips if you’re trying to sell your home: Not just Neutral While you will often hear that you should paint the walls neutral colors when selling … Continue reading

Review: Dollar Tree

I don’t have a lot of choices when it comes to nearby shopping. That’s one of the trade-offs of living in the country. Still, if I go fifty miles in any direction, there are more choices. I don’t normally drive that far just for the heck of it, but if I’m headed out anyway, I make sure to bring my shopping list! On one such trip a while back, I ventured into a Dollar Tree store. Wow! I loved it. It’s much better than most of the other dollar stores I’ve been to, and I got some really good deals. … Continue reading

The Trouble with Toys

(If I step on these one more time I’m going to…) Actually, it’s not the toys I have trouble with; it’s the child owner who repeatedly neglects to pick-up said playthings despite various forms of yelling, nagging and threatening. Sound familiar? Then, you too can likely relate to that Febreze commercial where the mom places all of her kids’ stuffed animals in the toy box only to find them strewn back on the floor the instant she turns around. How many times have you seen that ad and thought, “That’s so my life”? Not the possessed toy part; rather, the … Continue reading

The Sweet Smell of Success

Scentless flowers and smelly jeans; what is the world coming to? Today, I rushed into a local flower shop to purchase a bouquet of roses as a thank you for a sweet woman who went above and beyond to help my daughter with a school project. I was in a hurry, so I grabbed the first dozen roses I saw in the display case. When I got to the check-out counter, the florist was busy creating massive bouquets featuring three to five dozen of the most gorgeous roses in a variety of colors, including pale pink, lavender and a stunning … Continue reading

My Favorite Household Cleaning Product: Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser

If I had to pick my absolute most favorite housecleaning product, do you know what it would be? It would be Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser. I especially like the kind that is scented with Febreze. One of the first times I remember using this product was when I was a preschool teacher. I had to clean off the tables that were caked with dried paint and crayon marks. The spray we used wasn’t doing the job. Then someone suggested Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser. It took hardly any effort to wipe those tables completely clean. I use this product for a … Continue reading

The Smell of Clean

I love the smell of clean but let’s face it…with a house filled with children and pets; it can be difficult to come by. Thankfully we don’t have carpeting because I truly believe that helps to keep out the “pet smell.” But it doesn’t matter…with three dogs, one cat, a bird, two bearded dragons, fish and a turtle…it takes a little work to keep my home smelling clean. If you have pets, the key is to keep your pets and their habitats clean. I know that sounds really simple but it makes a huge difference. As for your children, well … Continue reading
