Driveways: In a Rut?

This may not be a problem for many homeowners, but for those of us that live in the country, driveways can become big issues. Even if you live in the city or suburbs, and you have recently built a home, you may experience similar problems. Recently cleared land means all sorts of fun stuff you might not have expected. If your drive isn’t paved, you may be finding that as the weather warms and the ground begins to thaw your driveway is becoming soft. This can soon lead to quite a mess. If at all possible, try to park elsewhere … Continue reading

Ask A Baby Blogger: Playing Rough with the Baby

My husband comes from a big family of boys, there are four of them and his dad. Our son is just eight months old, but they are always swooping him up and throwing him in the air. I was glad once when he threw up on one of his uncles. My husband gives me a hard time, because he says the baby is having fun so why am I so opposed. Help? I don’t blame you for being concerned. Honestly, you have to be careful when you are throwing a baby up in the air, your baby can’t communicate how … Continue reading

Does Your Teen Drive to School?

My parents allowed my brothers and I to share a single vehicle while we were in high school. Three teens (and one tween, who insisted on tagging along) sharing one car–definitely not a pretty situation. Still, that one car provided my parents with freedom some moms and dads only dream of. Not only did we use the car to get to and from school (thus, giving my parents a break from taxi duty), but it also transported us to all of our extra-curricular activities. Unfortunately, the car did not escape our teen years without sustaining serious damage (all my older … Continue reading

Facing The Real World In A High Rise—Part Two

In my previous blog I told you about my cousin’s new high-rise apartment. He just graduated from college a few weeks ago and this is his first “real” apartment. He used to live with five other classmates in a house just off campus, but now for the first time ever he is on his own trying to make the most of his new home in the big city. I don’t blame my aunt for being worried about him—-I’m sure I will feel the same way when my first-born gets her first apartment. But, the fact is, if my cousin follows … Continue reading

Facing The Real World In A High Rise

My cousin graduated from college a couple of weeks ago and will begin his first “real” job next month. That means he has about two weeks to get his new home in order. Last week we drove down to Chicago to help him move into his new… high-rise apartment. Yes, he is living in a high-rise building in the middle of the Windy City. Better him than me. I don’t think I could survive in a high-rise. When I graduated from college I moved into a two-story apartment building and I lived on the ground floor. I hated the idea … Continue reading

New Snow Removal Innovations

As I mentioned in my previous blog in a few hours the remnants of our last snowfall should be history. Hooray! Don’t get me wrong I love the look of a fresh blanket of snow. It’s gorgeous—–for the first few minutes. I agree nothing is more beautiful the way the full moon glistens off a lawn of new fallen snow—in a photograph. And, yes, you just can’t beat 12-inches of perfect snowball packing snow—if you’re a kid and you’re getting a snow-day. However, if you’re a homeowner, nothing spells hours of backbreaking work more clearly than a few inches of … Continue reading

Yes, you read that headline correctly. In Wisconsin, a three year old went in to get a stuffed Sponge Bob and became trapped inside the claw toy vending machine. Apparently, the toddler was on a trip to the mall with his three older siblings and his grandmother. The grandmother gave the children each a dollar to play on and let them have some fun in a game room. The toddler, named Robert Moore, tried without success to retrieve the Sponge Bob stuffed critter with the claw. His grandmother offered to get it for him, but he insisted on trying himself. … Continue reading
