earth When the lights go down in the city tomorrow night, it will be to mark the second worldwide Earth Hour. From Paris to New York, the world is banning together as a mark of solidarity to solve the problem of global climate change.

Earth Hour 2009 will see lights out or dimmed in a record eight-four countries as plans to dim or completely turn off all non-essential lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The event will take place on a time zone to time zones basis, meaning that participants affect their lights whenever 8:30 p.m. hits in their own time zone.

New studies and advanced technology allowing for more precise data are showing that the climate crisis is worsening at a fast pace. Participants of the Earth Hour hope that it signals that the citizens of the world seek action on the issue of climate change.

Websites and videos are popping up all over the Internet, and Earth Hour is one of the rising searches for YouTube, as people want to know how they can participate at home. To observe Earth Hour 2009, simply shut off all lights or dim them in your home for the hour. Imagine what it might be like if you no longer had access to power to run your home?

While most everyone agrees that something must be done, there are a few out there that believe that the climate crisis is propaganda being spread for some political purpose or based on faulty science. The Associated Press is reporting on at least one counter protest that will be taking place in Pennsylvania in which a citizen is going to use theater lights to illuminate his business while encouraging his neighbors to do the same.

What do you think? Will you be participating in Earth Hour?

Laura, you are definitely in the minority, I think. Would you like to give your opinion?
