Electronics: Walkie Talkies

I'm not sure this article goes under the heading "electronic entertainment." Even though walkie-talkies can be quite entertaining, especially for young children, they also have a greater purpose. They help people communicate.

Not only are they great for having a conversation when one person is indoors and the other is outside, without having to run in and out or yell out the window, but they are handy for checking on kids if they are outdoors and you have to run in for a second. I do not advise leaving small children unattended, ever. I'm never at ease when my kids are out of sight, but being able to talk to them helps. I also make them take a unit with them even if they are just walking to the neighbor's house.

Walkie-talkies are handy tools for camping and other outings as well. You can stay in touch with other members of your family or group. Even if you have a cell phone, it's a good way to stay in touch.

Walkie-talkies are also convenient if one person is upstairs and the other is on a lower floor. These gadgets come in handy when working on a project. You can push a button and ask your husband to bring up materials from the basement or garage while working on the attic. Save yourself extra trips up and down the stairs.

Some walkie-talkies can cover a lot of distance, such as the set we have which can be used for up to ten miles. However, you may need a license to use those that work for more than a mile, so be sure to check it out.

You might also want to consider purchasing rechargeable batteries and a battery charger if your walkie-talkies get a lot of use.
