Entertaining: Seven Tips for Barbeques

Throwing a barbeque is a great way to enjoy the company of family and friends while also enjoying beautiful summer weather. Even if you don't have a fancy patio, you can still make it a festive, enjoyable occasion.

Try these tips:

1. Keep food cold and fresh. Bacteria grows quickly in warm weather and it can cause food poisoning. Here's a great trick: Place a large pan or bowl with a shallow layer of ice beneath a bowl of food to keep it chilled.

2. Make sure you have plenty of seating. All of your outdoor furniture doesn't have to match precisely. Lawn chairs, folding chairs, and benches are fine, as long as everyone can sit comfortably. If you're worried about the mix and match look, make simple slip covers from a flat sheet or beach towels to help tie everything together.

3. Make sure you also have enough surfaces for guests to rest food and drinks. If your picnic table or patio table isn't large enough to seat everyone, provide additional tables. You can use TV trays or pick up a few inexpensive resin tables to place near chairs or benches. You can find them at most discount stores for as little as 3-5 dollars. Cover them to match seating if desired.

4. Provide a clean trash can so guests can dispose of waste. Keep it within eyesight, but not too close to dining or seating areas. Replace trash bags often and spray the can with disinfectant to avoid attracting insects.

5. Provide relief from insects. Treat your yard in advance, have torches or candles lit, or purchase a bug light. Whatever method you prefer is fine, but people will enjoy themselves far more if they don't have to worry about insects.

7. If you don't care for disposable tableware, consider hard plastic instead of glass. There are some cute styles and colors available that are perfect for picnics and barbeques. You can still set your table with style, without worrying about damage to dishes or injuries from broken glass.
