Entertaining Tips: Parties for Teens

Many parents have given up on having parties for teens. It's a shame, but it seems that all too often one kid crashes the party and starts trouble or at least one insists on doing or bringing something he or she shouldn't.

Since parents don't want to be held liable for accidents, injuries, or broken laws, many choose to avoid the chance for problems by avoiding teen parties altogether. If you would like to have a party for your teen but share these concerns, consider these tips:

*Call in reinforcements. Don't try to supervise a group of teens on your own. You're much better off having other adults available to help you chaperone and supervise. Kids are basically good, but temptation and peer pressure can be strong. Make misbehaving less tempting by having plenty of adult supervision.

*Do not allow kids to leave and come back repeatedly. A teen that goes down the block to sneak a drink and then returns can still create liability for you. If it is learned that he attended a party at your home and he is arrested or injured, you can be held liable. If it's a large party, you may consider stamping each teen's hand. Then, when someone tries to enter, you'll know for sure if that person has been there and left. Request that kids seek your permission and give a reason for leaving and returning. Constant coming and going should raise a red flag.

*If anyone starts fighting, refuses to stop coming and going, is caught with alcohol or drugs, or otherwise seriously misbehaves, insist that he or she leave. Call the child's parents and inform them of the problem. If the teen has been drinking or ingesting other substances, have the parents come to pick the child up. If necessary, call the police to have that person removed in order to protect others.
