Dandelions Part Two: Eat Your Weeds

Yesterday I wrote a blog about the health benefits and delicious nature of the lovely, not-so-lowly dandelion. For those who are feeling intrepid, here are some of the many ways to use the wild dandelions that you find in your yard. To harvest your dandelions, make sure that you find a place that is relatively wild and unsprayed, or simply grow them in your own yard. Yes, I’m telling you to grow dandelions. After all, they appear to be nearly-impossible to get rid of, so why not say that you actually want them there? If you are harvesting dandelions from … Continue reading

Marrying Miles from Home

As a previous article stated Wedding Location”>wedding location is a big decision. Some people have no doubts on where they will have their wedding. However others are more undecided. It seems that a new movement has been made toward having further away more exotic wedding destinations. Islands are very popular for those who choose to have their wedding in another location other than their home. Many also travel to the mountains for their wedding. Before packing your bags and heading off to get married there may be some factors that you should consider. Having your wedding miles from home can … Continue reading

Home Color Trends for Fall 2007

Are we talking about fall already? Yep. Pantone recently released a report on color trends for the home in fall 2007. There are some surprises. While there are still vivid reds and oranges and deep browns, there is an interesting mix of other hues as well. The reds are deep “red pepper” colors while the oranges are richer than the usual pumpkin pie colors. Brown has gone past the caramel neutrals and is expressed in cocoa and dark chocolate colors. The other colors range from purplish pinks that seem to have been plucked from flowers like lilacs, while the other … Continue reading

Home Décor—Valentine’s Day Flowers

Traditionally, one doesn’t decorate one’s house with dozens of flowers in preparation for Valentine’s Day (unless you are hosting a party or are wealthy). Rather, most of us wait to see if our special someone hand delivers the goods on the big day. (This tradition can lead to disappointment if you were expecting flowers and receive a card, candy, or gulp, a blender instead.) Let’s face it; flowers make for a much more attractive table centerpiece than a household appliance. Still not convinced flowers are the way to go this Valentine’s Day? Consider this: According to the Society of American … Continue reading

Even More Simple and Affordable Ways To Spruce Up Your Garden

In a previous blog I mentioned the Christmas card I received in the mail from one of my best friends, which features a photo of her three older children and her baby—her utterly gorgeous garden. Sure, she lives in Hawaii where she the climate allows her to toil in her soil year round, still it’s not just anyone who can write to Martha Stewart about a gardening dilemma and actually get a personal response from the domestic diva based on the pictures she sent and the information provided in her letter. Yes, my friend has quite the green thumb. It’s … Continue reading

Lush Tropical Plants For Your Garden

Surely some of the most beautiful sights in the world are the bold, exquisite tones that Mother Nature has bestowed upon her golden children: tropical plants. Every shade imaginable literally bursts upon the naked eye among the lush blooms and fronds of tropical plants and shrubs. But with all of nature’s infinite variety, one single factor connects them all and that is their point of origin. Their area of the world is unlike any other; lands that basically know no seasonal changes. For the most part, in the tropics, daylight is the same every day of the year and the … Continue reading

Easy Floral Arrangements For The Home

The best floral arrangements are ones that don’t look as if they were deliberately arranged. As odd as that may sound, a good rule of thumb is to remember that the less propping the better. The goal is to create a more or less English country garden look. How so, you might ask. Well read on for some tips. For one thing, use cluster flowers that have the consideration to practically arrange themselves. Lilacs, peonies, and hydrangeas, for example, are so full and dense that they don’t need any company. Good quality flowers that can stand on their own even … Continue reading
