Daddy is Home

After years of toiling in the late evenings and sometimes even into the next day, daddy is finally home at a family friendly “normal” time and the kids could not be happier. My husband worked very strange hours over the past several years and it would be an understatement to say it had a somewhat undesirable effect on our family. Because he worked so long and so late, breakfast became the most important meal of the day (which it is anyway by virtue of its necessity) because it was often the only meal we shared. Because he worked so long … Continue reading

Home Sweet Home

This past Monday I came back to my home in Wisconsin after a trip to Texas. My family went to see my 18-year-old son’s graduation from basic training with the Air Force. The eight weeks he was gone seemed to stretch on forever. But in the days leading up to the trip, I had so much on my mind in the way of packing and planning, that it diverted my thoughts at least somewhat. One of the goals that I had for this trip was to come back home to a clean house. I didn’t want to leave it in … Continue reading

FHE with Small Children-Visiting a Retirement Home

One of the songs we have been learning in the primary program this year is Nephi’s courage. I just love this primary song, and honestly, it gets stuck in my head after every single Sunday. The chorus, “I will go. I will do. The things the Lord commands. I Know the Lord provides a way, He wants me to obey” is very catchy. So, we had a special family home evening at a local retirement home that is in our ward boundaries. Members of our ward take turns doing a FHE with them. Our little family has been asked a … Continue reading

Coming Home From Vacation

Today was a travel and transition day for my family. This morning, we woke up in our hotel on Cape Cod. By bedtime, we were back home in Vermont. Transitions can be difficult for toddlers, and I could tell that today was a little rough for Dylan. He did his best, though, and I am proud of how well he has done this week with all of the new places, excitement, and different experiences. I am hoping that as we unpack and get settled back in to our home, Dylan will feel happy to be at home. I’m expecting that … Continue reading

FHE with Small Children-Strengthening our Family

I love when simple family home evenings make the best ones. That is my goal by sharing this FHE with Small Children series as often as possible. This past Monday night, we had a family home evening where my kids really listened, the lesson was short, and everyone got to participate. We started out talking about our own family. I asked my kids the following questions: Who is in our family? Do you think we have a happy family? Do we want to make our family stronger? I then told them about The Family: A Proclamation to the World. Since … Continue reading

Having a Happy Summer Home

Having a happy summer home requires a leader, a visionary, or perhaps a mom to keep everything under control and flowing. Summer can be an easy time of the year, but it has it own challenges. Keep the following in mind to have a happy summer home. Realize that each person may have a different vision of summer. It is important to have a family meeting to determine what the expectations are for summer. Dad might want to spend most of the time working outside on projects, while Mom might want to do day trips, and the kids just want … Continue reading

Make reading into a family event. While all of the past suggestions that I’ve made apply to families, today’s ideas focus on reading as a family bonding time.
