Fireworksby Sherry Holetzky | More from this Blogger 01 Jul 2006 08:23 AM While many people will go out and enjoy fireworks displays for Fourth of July, many will also purchase and set off their own fireworks. Do you and your family plan to have your own fireworks this year? If so, there are some things to keep in mind. Are they legal? In many areas, fireworks or at least certain types are not legal for individual use. Check the ordinances in your area to avoid getting a citation and having to pay a fine. You might also end up having your fireworks confiscated, and they are not cheap. It could end up being a very expensive lesson, so it's better to check first. Adult Supervision Required Big kids probably think they can handle fireworks, but it is not a good idea. Fireworks can be very dangerous, even when used as intended, but you also have to worry about kids getting "creative" with them. Follow Instructions Be sure to read the instructions and follow them carefully. Some fireworks packages are not intended to be opened, or the wrapper should not be removed. Some have fuses that are accessible outside the package and are meant to be lit that way. If you open them, you make expose the ingredients to spark or flame. If you are unsure, ask about the item before purchasing it. Use in Open Spaces Make sure there is plenty of open space not only for shooting off fireworks, but for embers to fall without landing on structures, trees, vehicles, and especially people. A large, empty parking lot or field (with permission) is a good choice. Keep a hose handy to put out embers if necessary. Be Considerate While you will likely want to wait until after dark to shoot off fireworks, it's best not to wait until late at night. Neighbors with sleeping children, or those that go to bed early, may not appreciate your form of celebration as the night wears on.
