Gardening is Great for Kids With Special Needs

There are many things about gardening that can be beneficial to children who have special needs. Parents don’t necessarily need to have a “green thumb” in order to set up a small garden for their child. Working in a garden can help kids become calm, and to develop useful skills. Gardening is a peaceful activity, which is why so many people enjoy doing it. There can be a tremendous amount of work involved with gardening, especially if the garden is a large one. The work may be hard, but it has a purpose, which tends to make people happier about … Continue reading

Gardening As A Whole Curriculum

Now that spring is here, most states are starting to thaw out and warm up. This an excellent time to begin a garden, no matter how small, and teach the kids about botany, art, vocabulary, water conservation, nutrition, and so much more. I’m a firm believer in getting the most bang for my buck and most use out of every moment. Each lesson you teach your kids can incorporate many subjects, not just the most obvious one at hand. Gardening is no different. The house we live in now has a nice back and front yard, but even when we … Continue reading

New to Marriage Blog but Not to Marriage

I’m popping in to say, ‘Hi’ and feeling excited to be joining Courtney on the marriage blog. My husband and I have been married for over 40 years, so hopefully I’ve learned something about marriage in that time to share with you all. Since May 2007 I have been writing in the Christian area and popping in for the occasional guest movie review. A number of my blogs in Christian have covered marriage. You can check some of them out below. Much of my life involves writing. I’m fortunate to have a husband who fully supports me. He thinks I … Continue reading

Save Money with Gardening

Summer is almost here and there is no better time to start a garden as a tool to save money. Not only will growing your own food save you money on your grocery bills, it is also a great stress reliever. Working in a garden is good for your body and soul. You do not even need to have a big backyard. Even a patio with pots will work fine. All you need is a place outside and some soil. Even a windowsill will function as a mini herb garden. Be creative and you can find a way to grow … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Beth McHugh!

Today we are joined by awesome blogger Beth McHugh. Beth, thanks for being here with us today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? Since the beginning…..December 2005. What topics do you blog about? I blog on Mental Health. I could use some mental health right about now. What is your favorite thing about blogging for Families.com? I like to bring what is largely a taboo subject out of the closet where it can be discussed in a friendly and comfortable environment. Mental illness affects most people, either directly or indirectly, yet it still remains something that many people do … Continue reading

Work, Family and Service People

Yesterday, my work day was even more challenging than is typical—in addition to work, home, and family—I had the added excitement of trying to work at my desk and computer while a new door was being installed only feet away from my desk… We’ve talked about the interruptions and distractions of trying to run a home-based business, but we usually focus on family and children. I hadn’t really thought about what it’s like to juggle service people, deliveries, gardeners, plumbers and all of those other individuals who are just trying to do THEIR jobs while we are trying to do … Continue reading

Stress and Digestion

Stress affects most organs of the body and the stomach is no exception. Stress can cause those familiar knots in the stomach, some types of ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, poor absorption of nutrients leading to further ill health, and oversecretion of stomach acids. If all this sounds like a pain in the gut, it is! Of course, not all these conditions are caused by stress alone, but a person who is subjected to chronic stressors in their life will almost always suffer some form of digestional difficulty. It may be a sore stomach, frequent burping, heartburn or gastric reflux, or bouts … Continue reading

Three Ways to Cope with Stress When Pregnant

It was funny, when I was pregnant because on more than one occasion my husband would state categorically (and very emphatically): “The pregnant woman wins. No contest.” It would be nice, if that were always true. That philosophy would mean that stress at work, stress at home and stress of life would evaporate for that nine months and just make your life easier. Of course, reality sets in and all the nice thoughts in the world will not make the stress of living day to day life go away, nor will it alleviate other sources of stress – including other … Continue reading

Slowing Down the Look of Aging

As I grow closer and closer to 50, I worry more and more about my skin. I thought my skin was bad when I was 30 – if I had only known then what I knew now! But, there are some things you can do (or not do) to help your skin not look as old – even at my age. Some things you can do are rather obvious. One is put on sunscreen every day. Yes, I said every day. Not just when you are gardening, not just when you are going to the beach – every day. That’s … Continue reading
