Five Years Later: Together We Stand …

This morning, I was driving my husband to work because there is a chance for heavy thunderstorms and since he rides a motorcycle most days, we’d rather he didn’t get drenched in a downpour. As we drove along in the car, we talked about September 11th and how we both cope with the memories of what happened today. He remembers that it was a day of sadness and he tries not to focus on the profound sense of loss. In his own way, he recognizes that the grief could be paralyzing and he’d rather be numb to it. Whereas I … Continue reading

Friday Funnies: Living On A Budget

Another summer week is over and we are still having a blast with the kids home from school. Everyday is a new memory created as we strive to do fun things with them, that we might not always do. I strive to create special memories and start new summer traditions as the kids get older, and this summer is no different. We’ve decided to implement a picnic in the park idea at least twice a month (me and the kids, haven’t discussed it with dad just yet!) Each time we’ll try out a new park until we find one that … Continue reading

End the Year With Family Time

New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to take stock of your life and focus on how you can make the most of 2013.  A new year means a fresh start.  Out with bad habits and in with better ones. For busy parents, evaluating the year gone by is a chance to reprioritize; for many that means figuring out ways to spend more time with their children. Of course, there’s no time like the present to get a jumpstart on that resolution.  To illustrate your newfound commitment, consider spending the last days of 2012 bonding with your kids.  Remember, it’s … Continue reading

Old Love Letters

Valentine’s Day when you are single is not quite as much fun as when you have a significant other. I generally try to do something nice for myself and several years ago I came up with a way to do something positive and clear some space in my life. We all have mementos from every relationship we’ve been in. Even if a relationship only lasts a week or two we seem to wind up with little things, a movie ticket stub, napkin from where we had our first drink, whatever it is, these little things add up. I admit to … Continue reading

The High Price of Fall Family Fun

(U-pick pumpkin poster child.) Imagine paying $50 for five pumpkins. Five mid-sized pumpkins… that are not filled with gold and didn’t come served on a silver platter. Not these bad boys. These $50 pumpkins were picked in a sandy, dirt-filled patch on an unseasonably warm day by bloody hands that were pierced by the heavy, gourd-like squash’s prickly stem… all in the name of fall family fun. Clearly, I’ve forgotten how much good ol’ fashion family fun can set a clan back these days. My family’s annual trip to the u-pick farm cost 50 bucks, but the memories–oh, the memories–well, … Continue reading

Family Fitness with Your Preteens and Teens

In this blog I am going to be talking about family fitness with your preteens and teens. This is definitely a whole new ball game, since engaging with this age group can be more of a challenge. The reality is that preteens and teens would rather be hanging out with their friends, but don’t take it personally. We just have to really instill in our children the importance of maintaining good family relations and spending time together. What better way to do this than bringing in some type of exercise? You don’t even have to tell your children that this … Continue reading

Mickey’s Halloween Parties

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. I love the candy and I love dressing up, and Halloween also summons sweet childhood memories about trick-or-treating with my friends and having autumn sleepovers (my best friend growing up’s birthday was two days before Halloween). So of course I’m excited to share what the Disney Parks’ plans are for the 2010 spooky holiday. Disney already excels in Halloween celebrations; their 1993 film “Nightmare Before Christmas” is one of my favorite to watch during this time of year (and then again at Christmas) and contains in my opinion one of the only good Halloween … Continue reading

How to Save Money on a Bathroom Renovation

It is a great time right now to renovate your home. The cost of building materials are down, and many contractors are lowering their labor charges in order to get work. You can save even more money when you do your projects yourself. Of course, getting your materials cheaply and making smart choices that save more money is even better. Imagine being able to completely renovate a bathroom for a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand? We are currently updating our downstairs half bathroom, doing all of the work ourself. It won’t be done as quickly as if … Continue reading
