Get To Know Your Freezer: You Break The Ice

Your freezer wants you to care for its upkeep and well-being, even if it cannot tell you so. It's important for it to be kept sweet smelling and free of ice and know that the chilliest corner of your house is its home. It works for you all the time with no one to talk to, and while you and your family are sleeping, it's doing its chilly best to keep your food frozen for you. What can you do in return? Consider the cold options below.

A Fresh Freezer: This is not a matter of a freezer who uses bad language or doesn't know its place in the company of elders or in your kitchen. This concerns freezer odor and one way to get rid of it. Believe it or not, ordinary fresh bread will do the trick. Place a loaf or two in the freezer and leave it there for three or four nights. It absorbs odors very well. Line the floor of your freezer compartment with aluminum foil. If frozen foods leak, this will prevent them from sticking to the freezer floor and can save you a messy and lengthy clean up job.

Freezer exterior: If your freezer is white, it can be kept sparkling clean and assured not to turn yellow by washing it with a mixture of ½ cup bleach, 8 cups of water and ½ cup of baking soda. Rinse well with clean water and dry thoroughly. Then rinse again with one cup of vinegar and one teaspoon of lemon juice. (Do not mistake these instructions for salad dressing.) Buff to shine. If your freezer is stainless steel, this will not work and you should use baby oil instead to remove those unsightly finger marks. Rinse with club soda.

Think about your freezer's feelings and include it in family affairs involving the kitchen or basement or wherever the freezer lives in you home. It wants to be your friend, but it's shy. So you be the one to break the ice. (You might as well. It's your house anyway.)
