Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival 2012

Disney fans have one big sign for the coming of spring, and it has nothing to do with a certain ceremonial groundhog. Nope, it’s something much more floral. Once the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival has kicked off, we know that spring is coming. Of course this is a bit of a cheat; as I said last year, the festival takes place in Orlando. That means it’s nice and warm for them year round. Oh, I know that some Orlando residents complain of the chilly 50-degree weather they sometimes get in the winter, but the rest of us living … Continue reading

Living Through Our Children

As parents we really do want the best for our children. I don’t think any parent intends to do wrong by their child. However without realizing it we may be making some big parenting mistakes. One of those mistakes that some parents make is to live through their children. Sometimes we do this because we want our children to be interested in the same things we are interested in. Or we do this because we want our children to do what we were never able to do. To me there is nothing sadder than a child being forced to do … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: February 4th Through February 10th

Our homes are the heart of our lives. This is never more evident when disaster strikes, as it has recently for so many. It is also a place where love grows, sometimes passionately, sometimes softly. When we celebrate Valentine’s Day, we can include not just our sweethearts, but everyone who comes under the shelter of our home. I am so amazed to realize that I get to share my love of the home with all of you. Please come along with myself and Sherry, as we bring you the subject, outside of family and friends, that is closest to our … Continue reading

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan – Lisa See

“Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” is a fiction novel, but it feels so real, it could almost be nonfiction. I came away smelling the dumplings and ginger, seeing all the images before me. Lily is the narrator, looking back over her life in China with the eyes of the eighty-year-old woman she’s become. She tells of her young childhood, when the diviner comes to set the date for her feet to be bound, and being told that her feet were so remarkable, she might have golden lilies, meaning, the smallest feet possible to attain at the approximate length of … Continue reading

Celebrate Fall In San Diego

Personally, I think San Diego shines all year round. But in the fall, the area plays host to a number of outstanding family friendly events, which makes visiting even more worthwhile. Sure, the city is home to world famous vacation attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Legoland and SeaWorld, which are open all year long, but if you are looking for unique fall-related special events to attend with your children the city is a premiere destination. Take a look at just some of the kid-friendly festivals that will be getting underway in the next couple of weeks: Fleet Week. … Continue reading

Relief For Airline Passengers With Prosthetics

Anyone who has flown since 9/11 has experienced the lengthy security lines at airports throughout the country. I’m guilty of having done my share of complaining about having to stand in line with a toddler and having to strip down to a single layer of clothes in order to pass through the X-ray machine without setting off the alarms. I often have to remind myself that my inconvenience is nothing compared to what passengers with casts, braces or prosthetic limbs are made to endure just so they can make it to their flights on time. I can’t imagine how relieved … Continue reading

What is God Like?

As a Christian, I always think it is exciting when I find a verse in Scripture that gives me a clear picture of the Character of God. In Exodus 34, God tells Moses that He will pass by him and show him some of His glory. In fact, God says that His glory is so great that Moses will not be allowed to look on His face because the sheer magnificence of God would kill him. As God passes by Moses, He puts His “hand” over Moses’ eyes to protect Moses from seeing His face and dying. After He is … Continue reading

May I See Your Passport Please

The rules for leaving and entering this country will become stricter for many travelers in a few days. In the past, most United States citizens did not need a passport to leave and enter many Caribbean nations, as well as Mexico and Canada. If you plan to travel to those destinations by air, you will need a passport. You can find out how to get a new one or renew one that has expired by typing “passport” into any search engine. Before I retired, I traveled to many international destinations. I have seen travelers make really stupid mistakes with their … Continue reading

What is the Dirty Dozen List?

One of my little frugal dreams is to one day walk into a store and see plump juice organic strawberries for very little cost. That dream may have a hard time being actualized, since organic strawberries, even when in season, can get expensive. Conventional strawberries, on the other hand, may be on sale or even available as a “loss leader,” an item that the store loses money on in the hopes of getting shoppers in the door. Still, it is a rare day when I buy conventional strawberries. They are just too high on the list of produce with the … Continue reading

Christmas Unplugged

Forget about dreaming of a white Christmas this year, most parents I know are hoping for an unplugged version of the holiday; a Christmas void of blaring televisions, raucous radios and vociferous video games. How likely are you to enjoy a genuine silent night this Christmas? If you want to know how to make your dream a reality, take some advice from the Bear family. In The Berenstain Bears’ Old-Fashioned Christmas, Brother, Sister and Baby Honey Bear get a taste of what the holiday was like pre-TV, when they travel to Grizzly Gramps and Gran’s house. After rolling up in … Continue reading
