Great Money Saver: The Chest Freezer

Having a large family creates a need for more freezer space. I decided that my large family could use some extra space so that we could take advantage of great sales. My husband and I did some research and learned that chest freezers use only about half the electricity each year as do their upright counterparts. This persuaded us that the chest freezer was the best option for our family.

Having limited space, we decided to go with a small freezer. We chose the 5.0 cubic feet model. Then we had to select a brand. After reading many reviews we decided to go with the Frigidaire. Frigidaire is a well-regarded name and most people who have purchased this freezer were very happy with the quality as well as the customer service provided by Frigidaire. It was also reasonably priced, at just $189.00 (price may vary by region).

We brought our freezer home, and I couldn't wait to buy something to put inside it. I took advantage of a great meat sale and stocked up for the next month. Our only dilemma was deciding which setting to use. Apparently, the dial was set in the factory (but had moved during shipping). We decided to put it at about the half way mark, but soon learned that this setting was too much even though the freezer was three quarters of the way full. With a little experimentation, we found that setting it between 3 and 4 was just right.

Chest Freezer

I have only had my freezer for about two months, but so far, I would recommend this freezer to anyone who is considering purchasing one. Even if you prefer a different brand than Frigidaire or you need a different size or model, I would suggest an extra freezer for any large family. It makes life (and staying within a budget) so much easier when you come across a sale and know that you have enough room in the freezer to stock up. At the rate we're going, my freezer will pay for itself in less than one year, because of all the money I am now able to save on groceries.

Great advice Sherry! I need to get one. I do freezer cooking so my freezer is generally very packed. A separate freezer would help tremendously!

I've been considering this for a while, and I am truly glad that I finally made the purchase. It really will pay for itself, and freezer cooking is also a great time/money saver. Oh goody! Something else to write about. ;o)
