If you have to take something apart and you end up with a pile of small parts and lots of hardware, you can use muffin tins to separate and store the pieces until you are ready to put the item back together. If there are many different sizes of screws, nuts, and bolts, stick a piece of masking tape above each muffin cup and number each one so you know the proper order for replacing each size.

If you don't have a ruler handy but need a ballpark measurement, use a dollar bill. It is approximately 6" long, so you should be able to get the general idea. This way of measuring also comes in handy if you're out shopping and come across a great furnishing but didn't happen to bring along a measuring tape.

Toolbox Tips

Line the drawers of your toolbox with felt to absorb moisture, oils, and other fluids. Felt is cheap, so you can afford to replace it often. It is a much better alternative than paying a lot of money to replace tools due to rust and corrosion. If tools are especially grimy, wipe them down with vinegar before replacing them in the toolbox.

Be sure to sort tools into proper compartments so you can find them easily, and make sure they are put away appropriately to avoid injury.

Other Stuff

If you find an item around your home, but you aren't sure what it is or what it's worth, don't rush to the computer to post it on E-bay, even if you're in a hurry to make more space. E-bay is a handy way to sell things, but you should get an appraisal first. Many homeowner's have found that family heirlooms and even garage sale finds are worth a great deal of money.
