Tips On How To Warm Up Your Home Without Touching The Thermostat

Today is the first day in more than a week that the mercury rose above 10 degrees Fahrenheit. For days we have been dealing with sub zero temperatures and wind chill readings around minus 35 degrees. It is unbearably cold and according to our crack team of local meteorologists, it doesn’t look like we will be warming up anytime soon. I won’t even tell you what I have my thermostat set at (let’s just say when I look at the display window all I see are $$$$). As a result, I’m trying to find alternative ways of making our home … Continue reading

Genealogy is the Perfect Cold Weather Hobby!

When the weather outside is frightfully cold, it greatly limits the kinds of activities that one can partake in, to pass the time. Not only will it be incredibly uncomfortable for a person to do anything outdoors in freezing temperatures, it can also be quite dangerous! Fortunately, genealogy is the perfect hobby to work on when it is really cold outside. Cold, wintery, weather makes a lot of people want to stay home and hibernate. It makes people want to crawl under blankets, to light fires in their fireplaces, or to heat their homes with space heaters. Many people will … Continue reading

The Thermostat—Who’s In Control?

I could answer my own question, but perhaps that would be a better fit for the marriage blog under the category: “Hot Topics Between Spouses.” For the purposes of this blog I will simply say this: if you marry someone from Hawaii and set up a household in Wisconsin, expect the thermostat to be set somewhere in the mid-70s. That said; I was surprised to learn that where a person was born and raised may not influence how high a thermostat is set as much as gender. Last month a leading national advertising agency surveyed 800 households to find out … Continue reading

Winter Weather Weapons No.2—Comforters

In my previous blog I decided to impose a moratorium on my winter weather complaints. I live in an area nicknamed: “The Frozen Tundra” so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that we are now starting week three of temperatures in the single digits and teens. Okay, we’ve established it is bitterly cold. Now what? This blog. I’ve decided to write a series of blogs detailing the ways we stay warm around our home. In “Winter Weather Weapons No. 2” we look at a cozy and effective alternative to the electric blanket—comforters. When I was growing up, comforters were not … Continue reading

Winter Weather Weapon No. 1—The Electric Blanket

I’ve spent the past 10 days complaining about the unbearably frigid temperatures that have slammed into the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast regions of the country… and today is no different. While the rest of my family is rejoicing because the mercury actually climbed into the teens today (we’ve been dealing with below zero temps for more almost two weeks) I simply refuse to take part in the festivities. I’m cold. Forgive me if I don’t consider 16 degrees cause for celebration. And, no, dear daughter you can’t wear shorts today (poor child was baking under the Hawaiian sun … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: February 4 – 10

I hope everybody is healthy, safe, and warm. This can be a rough time of year and we have some tips for you on those issues this week. This week’s review begins with an article about phoning home and ends with one about vintage looks. There is a lot of other stuff in between those two, and Marjorie, Michele, and I try to keep the Home Blog updated at least daily, if not a few times each day. If you didn’t have a chance to check all the topics out this week, you can check the list below to see … Continue reading
