Grill Cleaning Tips

My neighbor has decided to grill his turkey this Thanksgiving. What a bonus for his wife. She’ll have the freedom to cook as many side dishes as she pleases in their oven while Tom the Bird gets grilled outside. Apparently, there are legions of grill fanatics who don’t bother to pack away their cook tops when the temperatures drop. If you are one of these diehards, then it’s important to keep your grill as clean as possible. I’m not a huge fan of the fancy schmancy, as seen on TV grill cleaning tools, such as the Grill Daddy Cleaning Tool; … Continue reading

Cleaning Stainless Steel Pots and Pans

As if you needed another reason to invest in Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, I just found out that they do wonders for stainless steel cookware. I wouldn’t dream of using abrasive material to clean my pots and pans. Brillo pads, steel wool, and heavy-duty Scotch Brite sponges are to be avoided when cleaning stainless steel cookware, which is why I always used a soft rag and some soapy water to get rid of burnt and caked on food. However, last night I couldn’t find a clean cloth, so I picked up a Magic Eraser instead. I saturated the Eraser, added … Continue reading

When to Clean Showers

Cleaning a shower stall as soon as it is done being used is the best time to eliminate soap scum. In order to spare yourself from needless scouring, begin your cleaning regime while the hot steamy air from the shower is still evident. The steam helps loosen dirt and scum from shower floors and walls and allows you to wipe up grime much easier than if you were to tackle the job hours after the shower was turned off. When cleaning a shower stall, it’s best to start at the top and work your way down. If the steam is … Continue reading

How to Clean Your Steam Iron

You can easily clean your steam iron inside and out with this little trick. I don’t know about you, but I am constantly using my iron. It is one of those small appliances in my household that gets a lot of use. Growing up with just a regular non-steam iron, I got into the habit of using a spray bottle to wet down the clothing before ironing it. I continued to use this method, because I didn’t want the hassle of cleaning out the deposits from the iron. Well, over the weekend, the spray bottle broke. The nozzle snapped off … Continue reading

How to Clean Tough Deposits

Want a quick easy way to clean all sorts of deposits that are left behind? From your thermos to your toilet bowl, you can take advantage of this short cut way to get things really clean. My son loves to take his thermos to school. We fill it with milk, juice, and even warm soup.It is probably the one reason that he doesn’t mind taking his lunch to school every day. He says that his milk tastes better coming out of the thermos instead of a carton. I‘m not sure why, except that perhaps the thermos keeps the milk really … Continue reading

Five Quick Cleaning Tips

To me, there are few things better than good cleaning tips to help get chores completed in a quicker and easier way. I’d much rather be do something else -anything else- than cleaning. With that in mind, I’m always on the lookout for tips to share. Filter the Dirt Did you know that a clean, paper coffee filter makes a great cleaning cloth? It’s nealy lint free so it works great on mirrors, windows, other glass surfaces, and even shiny chrome or stainless steal. Try it. Add some Salt When you’re in a pinch, try a pinch of salt. Just … Continue reading

Does Sea Salt’s Benefits Outweigh Its Price?

This subject came up the other day when my friend Styrofoam Sue told me that she had switched from table salt to sea salt since it’s so much healthier and doesn’t contain a bunch of impurities. She went on to say that she heard some supposed health expert lecturing about the dangers of table salt since it’s “filled with sand and glass.” Sue honestly thought that every time she sprinkled some salt on her food that she was doing her body an injustice and perhaps harming it. True, I’m no salt expert, but after hearing her tout the wonders of … Continue reading

An Unexpected Reaction

I discovered mold underneath the sink in my bathroom last week. Living in a very high humidity area like the Pacific Northwest — that’s not a big surprise. I did some research on how to clean it up and prepared myself to tackle the growth. One important thing to note here: I’m allergic to mold in all forms. If I take penicillin (or any mold-based medication), I break out in hives. If I eat bleu cheese, my mouth burns. Knowing this, I protected myself with a face mask and rubber gloves. I figured I was in danger of ending up … Continue reading

This has been a week filled with various holiday articles from Veterans Day to Thanksgiving, and even touching on Christmas. More tips were added with Six More Days and again at Five Days Away and now we’re left with only Four Days to Go. Mary Ann offered a different type of checklist, with 12 Things to Do in November. Several of this week’s articles had … Continue reading

What is Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap is an annoyance and I know from whence I speak because for several months, my daughter experienced a really retched case of cradle cap. Also know as seborrheic dermatitis, cradle cap is a common condition in young infants. So what is cradle cap? It’s when greasy scales appear on the surface of your baby’s scalp. You can generally get rid of it with a mild massaging wash when you wash your baby’s hair and the scales will loosen up and fall off. If the case of cradle cap is severe, you may want to use petroleum jelly or … Continue reading
