Make the Most of Summer Travel

Featured

Whether you homeschool year-round or take time off during the summer months don’t let the season of sunny days fly by without a few fun lessons. Family road trips are the ideal vehicle for hands-on learning.  Rather than allow your kids to blow travel time watching movies, playing video games or annoying their siblings have them master geography using colorful flashcards or practice math facts using your vehicle’s odometer and mile markers along the highway. By involving the entire family in some interactive “car-schooling” your kids will have the states and capitals memorized in no time.  To test your children’s memory … Continue reading

A Brief Look at Paul Ryan’s Family Tree

Earlier this year, I did a series of blogs that took a brief look at the family trees of candidates who were (or who hoped to be) running for President of the United States in 2012. I will now continue the series by looking at the family tree of the Vice Presidential candidates. Here is a brief look into Paul Ryan’s family tree. This year, the Republican party selected Mitt Romney as their choice of candidate to run for President of the United States in 2012. It was very recently revealed that Mitt Romney selected Paul Ryan as his choice … Continue reading

Thinking Twice About Using Your Debit Card

CNN has scarred me from using my debit card. The cable news network’s story on skimming makes me want to cut-up my card and use cash only for purchases. For those of you who missed CNN’s piece (or similar stories broadcast on other networks), skimming is a practice perfected by thieves looking to capture your bank card information by sliding it through a special machine. The device, which is often placed over real card slots at ATMs and other payment terminals, reads the card’s magnetic strip and basically gives complete strangers access to your checking account. According to financial service … Continue reading

My Family’s Link to the History of Valentine’s Day Cards

Sometimes, the place that your family calls home can have some fun facts associated with it that add interest to your family history. This is one of the reasons that I like family history books – they add depth to the information that is found in family trees. For my family, one of the fun facts about the city where my mother and father were raised as well as the town that they live in (and where I was raised) has to do with Valentine’s Day. Both my mother and my father were raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. My mother was … Continue reading

How to Prepare Your Christmas Cards

Are you always behind on preparing your Christmas cards or Holiday cards? Here are some easy steps that you can take to make the process smooth and fun this year. First, get your list started. This may simply be a review of last year’s list. If you don’t have a list, you’ll have to start from scratch. Figure out if you need separate lists for home and business. A good place to start is with your address books. Start with the people that you know you must send cards too. Prioritizing gives you some wiggle room. Instead of trying to … Continue reading

Move Over Poker, There’s A New Card Game In Town

Today I came across a genealogy game that looks like it could be both fun and educational at the same time. Six Generations is a game that consists of a deck of seventy-two cards. The game may be played with or without a game board and six-sided dice, and it is designed for use by players age six to adult in groups of two or more. The cards for this game are beautifully illustrated. The illustrations on the cards depict people from America and many European nations, who were born in different time periods. Each character has his or her … Continue reading

Wednesday’s Weekly Challenge-Leftover Christmas Card Challenge

I know what you’re thinking. Christmas is over! Well, do you still have those cute Christmas cards you got in the mail lying around. Are you thinking….”I don’t want to just throw those away!” Well, maybe you don’t have to. Have you ever thought of scrapping them? While some cards I get are from people I don’t know that well, I still may want to take a look at the card and see if there is a piece of the card I want to keep. So many cards now come with decorative designs on them that would make a great … Continue reading

On Blogging and Real Life

Yesterday was a wonderful day. We celebrated winter solstice. After the darkest day of the year, the light starts to return to the northern hemisphere. We began with trimming the tree in the morning. It is an outdoor tree, so it comes indoors for less than a week, beginning on winter solstice. We moved on to decorating the back yard with food for the birds and watched chickadees move from seed-covered cone to seed-covered cone. In the evening, we went on a lantern walk through the forest at a church near the ocean. We threw stones in the ocean to … Continue reading

Choosing a Christmas Tree

Choosing a Christmas tree sounds like a simple exercise, but sometimes it is not. First there is the decision about whether to have an artificial tree or a real tree. For me there is no contest. The real tree wins hands down. Yes, I know they drop pine needles and you have to get rid of the dead tree at the end of the Christmas period, but it is worth it for that smell of Christmas that comes in with the pine. Since we are in summer in Australia there’s no point buying a tree too early, even though the … Continue reading

Make Your Christmas Party Merry and Bright

Hosting family and friends of all ages during the holidays is a joy, but making sure that everyone has a good time at your seasonal shindig can be challenging if you are not prepared. After all, you need more than good food and drinks to keep everyone entertained. If you are inviting a bunch of kids to a party, then make sure you have age appropriate activities for them to participate in. Even if you have a few toys lying around, it’s a good idea to have a few organized activities to keep them occupied. To keep your youngest guests’ … Continue reading
