How to Trim the Toys

For me, toys are one of the hardest things for me to deal with in my quest for a well-organized home. We seems to have a lot of toys for the kids, and they tend to get more and more of them. Then of course, they are hard for me to get rid of. The kids seem to want to keep all of them all of the time, even the ones that they don’t play with. Then of course, I have a hard time getting rid of toys, too, since I remember the fun times that we had with them. … Continue reading

Jumping Ban

This just in: Trampolines are dangerous for kids. In other news, the sky is blue. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Earlier today, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced that parents should ban trampolines from their backyards, as they could be potential death traps for kids. Citing nearly 100,000 serious injuries in 2009, the AAP issued the warning and noted that safety nets parents erect around the personal jumping devices do little to protect kids from harm. In fact, members of the AAP state that trampoline nets are often more of a detriment than a benefit because they … Continue reading

End-of-Summer Mom Savers

Kids in Hawaii started the new school year last Monday. Meanwhile, my pal in Atlanta just told me her kids head back to class tomorrow. Are you ready to say so long to summer? I’m not! I am dreading the back-to-school blues, including packing lunches, ironing uniforms, looking for missing shoes as the bus sits at the end of the driveway, and fighting with kids about going to bed when the sun is still shining brightly at 7:30 p.m. Still, if there is an upside to back-to-school, it’s got to be the sales. Not the ones on school supplies; rather, … Continue reading

Liability Waivers and Toddler Birthday Parties

If your toddler participates in any organized activity, such as day care or baby fun activity centers, you are probably used to signing a waiver before your child can participate. After all, minor bumps and bruises can be a part of a child’s life, and most healthy toddlers have a banged knee at one point or another. But what if you have to sign a liability waiver just for your toddler to attend a friend’s birthday party in someone’s home? You have to agree to hold the host family harmless if something should happen to your little one. Why a … Continue reading

Teaching Little Ones To Clean Up

It’s spring cleaning time and a perfect time to teach your little one ( or not so little one) to clean up after herself. Being a single mother means you need all the help you can get so the last thing you need is to spend your time picking up things your kids have set down and never put away. Teach them when they are little and it won’t be such a battle when they get older. I always felt guilty having Hailey help clean up. My guilt from the divorce spilled over onto everything but I finally had to … Continue reading

Santa Needs $1 Billion in Insurance Coverage

Santa has a unique job, that comes will all sorts of risk management issues. Lockton is an insurance company that works on risk management, and employee benefits. They have taken a look at Santa’s business, and come up with a policy that would fit his needs. Lockton took a close look at K. Kringle Manufacturing Inc., (which, of course, is the business owned and operated by Santa Claus), and identified exactly what type of insurance Mr. Claus would require in order to have the right amount of risk protection. The insurer also came up with specific claims scenarios that could … Continue reading

Sales Happening This weekend – November 5, 2011

This is the time of year when stores start having weekend-long sales, in the hopes of attracting customers who are thinking about shopping for holiday gifts. Some of these sales end when the weekend is over. Other deals will last a bit longer. November just got started a few days ago, and already, it feels like Black Friday is almost here. Retailers this year are not being shy about letting people know when they plan on opening for the biggest sales event of the year. Some stores are having sales weekends, and starting good deals, right now. Hallmark is having … Continue reading

Taming Tantrums Part 2

You read yesterday about some tips to alleviate some of the common causes of temper tantrums. Today we’ll talk about some more tricks to make everybody’s lives a little easier. Nobody likes to go to the doctor. Your kids are no different. They may feel some anxiety about having to get shots every time they show up at the doctor’s office. Try to be empathetic. Shots are no fun and can be frightening for kids. Let them know that it’s ok to be scared, but that it’s important to get shots so that they don’t get sick. Try giving them … Continue reading

Declutter Your Marriage

When you move house it’s often a good time to declutter and get rid of things you no longer use. Deciding which things to get rid of is a hard decision. The obvious choices are things you have not used for years. For example you might decide to get rid of baby clothes and equipment when you have reached the end of childbearing. Some people I know have done this but then found themselves with a surprise pregnancy and had to restock. Once the kids have grown and left home you might decide to get rid of toys. Or you … Continue reading
