Ideas for Decorating the Nursery

All parents want a great nursery. What could be better than adding softness with your own special touches, which are made with lots of love?

Soft Blocks

Make your own soft blocks from foam covered in cute fabric. Cut the foam to the size you want and if it isn't thick enough, add another piece with spray adhesive. Measure and cut squares of fabric to fit each side as well as the top and bottom. Sew all the pieces together except for the bottom piece. When attaching the bottom piece, sew only one side. Slip the cover over the block and then sew the remaining sides of the bottom closed. Add appliqués that feature letters, numbers, or cute images, to the sides.

Comfy Cubes

You can also make cute and comfy cubes that babies can play with but that will also double as seating for toddlers. You may want to use denim or another sturdy fabric for this project. Follow the directions above, until you get to the bottom piece. Add Velcro or snaps to the open sides on the bottom then slip over the cube and secure the enclosures. This way, you can easily remove the covers when they need to be washed. Cubes can be all the same size or different sizes to add interest. Decorate as desired.

Wall Hangings

You can cut cute shapes from foam and cover them with fabric to make adorable wall hangings. Balloons, teddy bears and other animals, clouds, a sun, a rainbow, hearts, stars, or anything else you like will make great additions to the nursery and will add lots of softness. Draw your own items, trace pictures from coloring books, or print off clip art, cut it out, and trace it onto the foam. The easiest way to cut foam is with an electric knife (the type used for carving a turkey). Cover the foam and sew the fabric on from behind or use fabric glue.
