Decorating with Photographs

Taking photographs can be a great hobby. Photos can also be a great personal and relatively inexpensive way to decorate your home. Some people might want a collage of family photos and they can look quite effective having a display and it makes a house very personal and like a home. Another idea might to take photos of your area or a particular feature that appeals to you like rivers or bridges, sand dunes or buildings. Recently I entered a competition for photographs to go on a calendar of the area. It’s not that I’m an expert photographer by any … Continue reading

Know Yourself When Decorating

Tricia raised the idea in her article of open shelving in the kitchen. To me that sounded like a nightmare. I could imagine everything getting grimy from cooking. When it comes to housework, I’m inclined to go for the easy option most of the time, and especially when it comes to kitchens. I often see kitchens where they have copper pots hanging from the ceiling and various other items on display and think how nice it looks, but it is not for me. My kitchen is easy wipe down surfaces and easy to keep clean laminate cupboards that I just … Continue reading

Redecorating a Room- Part 2

Last week we looked at some tips for redecorating a room. I suggested using your favorite color or colors to decorate a room. Another idea is to think of your favorite outdoor location. If it is the beach, you might be a person who is most comfortable with blues and sandy colors. If it is a forest you might be happier with deep greens. Don’t just consider plain paint for the walls. Instead you might chose to go with a textured paint such as a suede look or you might decide to do what we did in one house and … Continue reading

Hints When Redecorating a Room

Before you even start to redecorate there are some questions you should ask yourself. First among them is what purpose the room is to be used for and who will use it. These will determine the types of materials and colors you chose to use. For example if you have young children an all white color wall and furniture color scheme and white or pale colored carpet would be highly impractical. You would spend your life getting stressed about keeping it clean and probably drive your family crazy in the process. We have white tiles on our family, dining room … Continue reading

Books,Books and More Books

Continuing the saga of books in the house, this is where the others are. My study has mostly writing and poetry related books, umpteen journals and exercise books with my writing and quiet time times in them and several children’s books from writers I admire like Eleanor Spence and Madeleine L’Engle. Another shelf has bible translations and commentaries, dictionaries and reference books. I also have writing magazines from various writing related organisations I belong too as well as copies of my own books. Then there’s the second bedroom. It has children’s books from when the children were young as well … Continue reading

A Relaxed Home

Have you ever walked into an exhibition house at a display village? They are often tastefully decorated but are impersonal. They have a certain bland sameness. The reason is they are decorated by decorating firms without any idea of a personality. When a visitor walked into our home recently she said, ‘what a lovely home.’ The reason I believe, is not because of the floor plan of the house but because our house simply reflects our personalities and interests. Several things are evident from when you first walk in the door. One is that we love books. Two is that … Continue reading

Putting Things in a Safe Place

There is nothing more frustrating that knowing you have something and not being able to find it when you need it. I did this recently. I put a book in such a safe place I couldn’t find it. Why on earth didn’t I just put it on my desk or the bookshelf you might ask? I have no idea. Instead I slipped it into a safe place till I could get around to reading and reviewing it. I put it in such a safe place that when I wanted it, I couldn’t find it. I had a feeling I’d done … Continue reading

Making a House a Home

This will happen as you start to spread out your own bits and pieces you have chosen or been given that you love. But allow for the fact that tastes change. As we looked back at some of … Continue reading

Changing Fashions In Home Furnishing

How things change. When I was growing up my grandmother used to crochet doilies. All the family had them .Back in those days just about every house had them. Most were white or beige crocheted doilies that went under the ornaments or anything placed on a table or shelf. I remember one my mother in law made that had a trim of purple and orange pansies around the edge. Doilies were all the rage back then. Now you hardly every see them and with good reason. To my mind they always made everything look fussy and cluttered. Certainly we do … Continue reading

Buying a Lounge- Part 2

There can be a huge difference in prices as well as quality in furniture, so it pays to shop around. It’s worth time to go to several places and compare prices, warranties on the workmanship, delivery times, etc. You might want to consider whether in arm chairs you want recliners or rockers or even one of each. Mick prefers the recliner. I find them uncomfortable and would never use the reclining action. I much prefer a rocker, so a suite that had one of each or that could do both would be best for us. Be aware manufacturers may charge … Continue reading
