When Did Your Children Start Taking Showers?

Bath time in our home is a key part of our bedtime routine. However, it is also a monumental production… for two reasons: First, the bathtub has morphed into another playroom. There are more toys in there than an average daycare has in its entire building. That’s not counting the 31 “flavors” of bubble bath, gels, beads, funny foam and other various accoutrements that my daughter chooses to enhance the water with on a nightly basis. This, of course, turns what could be a simple 5-minute wash-n-go, into a 55-minute (when I’m lucky) play-a-thon. Second, my preschooler screams like a … Continue reading

Toddlers and Tub Injuries

According to a new study, your toddler is more likely to be injured in the bathtub than on the playground, the kitchen or the garage. On average, more than 43,000 kids are treated in hospital emergency rooms annually for injuries sustained in the tub or shower. What’s more, the study reveals that toddlers account for more than half that number. Researchers say about 60 percent of the injuries were lacerations (cuts and tears to the skin) while another 20 percent were sprains and other soft-tissue injuries. The part of a toddler’s body that was most commonly affected was the head, … Continue reading

Toy Invasion

Is there a room in your house that doesn’t have a single toy in it? Yesterday I realized that the only place in our home that has not been infiltrated by my preschooler’s toys is the laundry room. And that room only qualifies as the “winner” if I don’t count the tiny pile of plastic animals I extracted from my daughter’s pockets the other day. The jungle creatures have temporarily set up residence on top of the dryer. The rest of our abode looks like the inside of a daycare facility. There are piles of plastic dinosaurs in the hallway, … Continue reading

Elliot’s Bath and Elliot’s Shipwreck – Andrea Beck

The other day my husband stopped at the library and as per my request, grabbed me a handful of picture books to read to my children. Two that he brought home feature the cutest little stuffed moose I’ve ever seen, and if you know anything about me and my relationship with children’s books, you’ll know that the cuter the illustrations are, the better I’ll enjoy the book. The first book is “Elliot’s Bath.” It snookered me in right from the start with the front cover – Elliot is sitting in the bathtub, a cute rubber ducky at his knee, and … Continue reading

Organizing “Problem Areas”

Last night, I dreamt of owning a bulldozer. I had contemplated using one on my daughter’s playroom the other day, so I’m sure it was just an offshoot of my subconscious. It may sound ridiculous, but it was the only tool I could think of that would accommodate the task of singularly scooping up all of the toys that lay strewn on the floor. The room looked like a toy-eating dragon regurgitated his five-course meal on the floor. Just looking at the mess made me want to curl up on the floor and fall asleep (I very well would have, … Continue reading

Tips For Strategic Storing

It’s a fact of life (my life anyway), I never have enough storage space. Since graduating from college I have moved seven times (two of which were trans-Pacific moves). Each time I moved I thought I was getting a bigger and better place. However, I quickly deduced that paying more rent didn’t always translate into more space. Thus, I learned the hard way how to make the most of limited space. Here are a my favorite tips for strategic storing: “Don’t store things you don’t need,” or so preaches my mother (the queen of vacuum-sealed plastic storage bags). But, she … Continue reading
