Keep Your Cooling Bill In Check This Summer

Summer is here, and for many of us that means saying goodbye to sweaters and long sleeves and hello to tank tops, shorts, and flip flops. Although summer clothes are fun and on most days keep us fairly cool and comfortable, there are days when it is very hot outside and you need something more than breezy clothes to keep you cool. There are even some days when it can get dangerously hot and keeping cool becomes less about comfort and more about safety. Air conditioners are a very good way to keep your home cool, but they add quite … Continue reading

Life Without a Microwave

As many of you know Mick and I got rid of our microwave some time back as we were concerned about health issues with it. Family members were both astounded and incredulous about how we were going to manage. But then we survived plenty of years before the microwave came into existence and we would never have had one at all if it hadn’t been inherited. So, how is life going along without a microwave? It’s fine. It just means we need to remember to get meat or anything we need to defrost out beforehand, just the way we used … Continue reading

Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie Explore Everyday Dangers

When I read the title of Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie’s new book, I freaked out a bit. It is called “Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret Danger of Everyday Things.” My son’s bathtub is filled with rubber ducks. Smith and Lourie did things we each do every day. For two days, they ate, showered, shampooed, and played Guitar Hero on the sofa. But, one thing they did that we don’t do every day is they took blood and urine samples to monitor for toxins. While their research noted that they had levels of the seven toxins for which … Continue reading

Know Yourself When Decorating

Tricia raised the idea in her article of open shelving in the kitchen. To me that sounded like a nightmare. I could imagine everything getting grimy from cooking. When it comes to housework, I’m inclined to go for the easy option most of the time, and especially when it comes to kitchens. I often see kitchens where they have copper pots hanging from the ceiling and various other items on display and think how nice it looks, but it is not for me. My kitchen is easy wipe down surfaces and easy to keep clean laminate cupboards that I just … Continue reading

Is Your Microwave a Danger to Your Health?

Modern conveniences are all very well and many make life easier. But sometimes I wonder about some of them. One in particular which is a staple appliance in most homes has come under criticism. It is the microwave oven. I remember when Microwaves first came out, there were a lot of rumors and people were wary about whether they were safe. It took me a long time to warm to the idea of a microwave and I’ve only ever used it in an emergency to defrost the meat or to cook vegetables. Then this week I was directed by someone … Continue reading

Weighing up the Costs

We bought our freezer a little over 40 years ago. It has been going strong all that time. They just don’t make appliances like they used to. These days they are not made to last any length of time. At the stage when we bought our freezer, they were still relatively new in Australia. It was expensive but we took out a loan and paid if off. That freezer has been without doubt one of the best investments we ever made. Over the years it has saved us a lot of money by being able to buy in bulk and … Continue reading

Safer Cleaning Products

Cleaning our home safely and with no toxins has become a project of mine. We want to kill the germs and bacteria in order to keep Maggie healthy, but we don’t want the chemicals getting into her lungs and causing her any breathing trouble either. So after her diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, I went on a mission to remove the chemicals and keep the clean. I have to say that my favorite products are by Seventh Generation; however, there are other great companies that offer the cleaning power of regular products without the harshness. In addition, I use hydrogen peroxide … Continue reading

Be Wary

Be very wary about things electrical. That’s the warning coming from an investigator for an insurance company. Last week a house in our town burned to the ground. The family lost absolutely everything and had to rely on charity just to have clothes to wear. This seems to happen every year but this year there have been a few more than others. Then later that week I received a warning from a friend identifying an area of concern. According to the insurance investigator, the cause of the fire was one of those air fresheners that get plugged into the electrical … Continue reading

Things You Learn When Electricity It Out

You never realize how often you go to turn on a light inside the walk in closet or any room even when you know the electricity is out. It’s force of habit almost to reach for the switch. It makes us realize how dependant we are on it these days. Here is a list of the things you can’t do and those things you should do when the power is out. You can’t listen to radio and get updates about what is happening or turn on the computer unless it runs by battery. It makes you realize that a backup … Continue reading

Simple Things Work

Eucalyptus oil is one of those commodities no home should be without. Eucalyptus oil for me brings back memories of childhood. When I was a child, my mother put it on the pillow at night whenever I had a cold. She also put it on handkerchiefs. It’s something I did with our children when they were young too. All these years later I still use a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil on the pillow to help me breathe, when I have a cold or flu. It seems to clear the nose like nothing else does. The other way to … Continue reading
