Disney Ditches Junk Food

The House of Mouse is going healthy… what’s a parent to do? Now where I am going to find out which toys are being featured in McDonald’s Happy Meals? Apparently, not the the Disney Channel. Newsflash: Walt Disney is banning all junk food ads on programs that target children. According to reports, Disney has become the first major media company to nix ads for unhealthy food and beverages on Disney XD and during Saturday morning programs on Disney-owned ABC television stations. The company’s push to support nutritional options for kids will also be implemented on Disney Channel and Disney Junior, … Continue reading

Cleaner, Greener Houses

April is Earth month and all though we all know the things we can do in our home to get rid of toxins and make it more Earth friendly, sometimes we need a reminder. Here is your reminder. You’re welcome. *Dust with a damp cloth to make sure the toxins in the dust in your home don’t just get redeposited in the air. *Open your windows occasionally, even in the winter, to allow fresh air in and stale polluted air out. *Buy organic food for your family. It is grown without pesticides or fertilizers and meat contains no drugs or … Continue reading

Fathers & Food

Most of us have some memories of our mothers making and serving delicious foods, some every day, some just on the holidays. I grew up a very hungry person, well able to consume large pizzas in a single sitting. So I have compassion for hungry children. My wife was in an exciting, entertaining, and not a fun car accident, and while she recovers, I get to cook most of the household foods. There are some downsides to that. While I like quality, tasty foods, I get so hungry that don’t care, as long as it is healthy enough, rather than … Continue reading

Junk Food in the House

You may have read about my war on crumbs. Well, now I have a new war in my home, and it centers on junk food. Most of the time we eat a pretty healthy diet, but sugar and butter are weaknesses. We make special trips to Amish country to pick up flour and come home with 25 pounds of cane sugar as well. We use that sugar for baking, for homemade ice tea and in coffee, and it is surprising how much we go through. So it is probably no surprise that I try to limit the sugar in other … Continue reading

Loving Less Expensive (and Junky) Food

Are the rising food prices killing your budget? Why not make some changes to adapt your family to more home cooked meals. They are generally less expensive and offer better nutrition. This is the third article in a series today in which I talk about how our food palate can influence our food choices and our budget. By training your pallet, to less expensive food, you can seriously reduce your food bill. If you missed the two earlier articles, click here: The Frugal Palate Phenomena and Training the Frugal Palate. Let’s continue. My own kids tend to prefer home cooked … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: A Toddler’s Proper Place on the Weight Charts

Question: My youngest is one and starting to lose ground on the charts. All of my kids went through this when they started becoming very active and I night weaned. My ped wants me to stop breastfeeding and put him on whole milk. I want to continue to breastfeed. I’ve been giving him baby yogurt, ice cream (he hates it), avocado (he hates it) cookies and other junk food to get the calories in. Any other suggestions? Ah. . .doctors and their lack of knowledge on breastfeeding coupled with their attachment to those charts = a dangerous combination. To put … Continue reading

Being Eaten Out of House and Home

People joke about the bottomless appetite of the teenager. But, like most good jokes, it’s the kernel of truth that makes it so universally funny. Unless, of course, you are a parent in the midst of those adolescent eating years and trying to keep the cupboards stocked and the fridge full… We live in an enclave of townhouses and condos with a large, shared pool. Combine that sweet reality with the fact that we also have air conditioning and plenty of soft places to sit and I’m here to tell you that in the few short weeks of summer so … Continue reading

Playhouse Disney Mini-Shows

If you found my blog about PBS Kids Sprout mini-shows informative, then this one will be just as interesting for you to read. Playhouse Disney also has quite a few mini-shows that they present in between their regular programming. They have had some regular ones for a while and recently they have added a few more. My daughter loves all of them, so I figured it would be nice to share them with my readers. Go, Baby! This is about a little baby boy and his discoveries of the world around him. For a while, they just showed the same … Continue reading

Surviving the Food Court

What to Do When The Food Calls Out to You in Neon from Every Angle As a stay-at-home mom, I’m always looking for ways to get the kiddo out of the house to burn off some much needed steam. I’m really lucky–I live within walking distance of a super cool outdoor shopping center equipped with Barnes and Noble, outdoor play yards and jungle gyms. But when faced with inclement weather, I’m forced to take the wee thing to an indoor play center that’s surrounded by what else: the dreaded food court. The whole thing is encompassed (yes, 360 degrees) by … Continue reading

The Free Money Box

In the kitchen of our house, on a kitchen pantry, sits a brown nondescript box a little smaller than a standard shoebox. It is pretty plain, with the exception of a small white label on it, and a designation written in pencil. The words read, “Free Money.” This little free money box has come in handy on many occasion, and has helped us to buy things we needed or wanted without spending a dime. It is a place we go to first, before we get in the car. Our free money box contains the following types of items: Gift cards … Continue reading
