Keep Out Mold and Dustby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 14 Jun 2008 07:26 PM
Make sure your vacuum contains a HEPA filter. You would be surprised how much this will improve the air quality in your home. Don't forget to vacuum all upholstery, carpet and window treatments. When you dust, use a damp cloth or a microfiber cloth to catch the dust, rather than using a feather duster. A feather duster will just spread the dust around or release it back into the air. Also, wearing a face mask will reduce the chance that you will breath in any dust. Dust the walls and ceilings often because these areas can collect dust as well. Don't forget ceiling fans, on top of doors and windows, behind furniture and under the bed. As mentioned in an earlier post, wash the bed linens at least once a week, and wash them in hot water. Don't forget any comforter covers and mattress covers as well. Skip the dust ruffle on your bed unless you plan on washing that weekly as well. Choose natural cleaners instead of harsh chemical cleaners. This will help you avoid potential reactions and cut down on the number of VOCs in the air. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas of your home to discourage mold. Optimally, there should be less than 50 percent humidity in your home. A hygrometer can measure the level of humidity in your home. In winter, use a humidifier to add humidity to dry air. This will cut down on sore throats, dry nasal passages, nosebleeds and even the chance of catching colds.
