The Best Way to Clean Baby and Toddler Toys

Have you ever wondered how sanitary your baby or toddler’s toys are? Most toddlers have the ability to grab toys and put them into their mouths. This is especially true for babies and toddlers that are teething. Keeping toys clean can help prevent illness from spreading. Does your baby or toddler use a teething toy? Good Housekeeping recently reported that a popular toddler teething toy called Sophie the Giraffe has the potential to grow mold inside it. Some parents, who cut apart Sophie the Giraffe, discovered that the inside was coated with black mold. Carolyn Forte, the Director of the … Continue reading

Teething Trouble (Maybe?)

My son has been fussy lately and my wife and I have been wondering why. We fear that his teeth are coming in and we fear that these teeth will turn our little baby into a terrible monster ready to eat anything in sight, turning his gentle defecations into unbearable mountains of filth requiring gas masks and special gloves simply to handle the thin, disposable diapers keeping the dangerous contents from harming our sensitive skin. Perhaps we’re overreacting, a little. Somehow, though, these changes will come sooner or later and our little baby will grow up, even more than he … Continue reading

Of Mice, Teeth, and Fairies

The magical day has arrived… Happy Halloween to those who are dressing up and celebrating today! I’m taking a break from putting the finishing touches on my costume to give some thought to the Tooth Fairy. Why? Because that’s what I’m going to be for Halloween! For many people, teeth are a milestone. When are the baby teeth coming in? When are the baby teeth falling out, to be replaced by adult teeth? The change from infant to child to adolescent can be measured in our teeth. In the days when superstition was strong, teeth falling out could be bad … Continue reading

My Obsession with Baby Feet

Let’s face it, babies are cute even when they fill up their diapers. We all know that. But when it comes to baby feet, I am completely obsessed. I just love little baby feet. They are cute, compact and unlike adult feet, adorable. I love the little toes and the little flat arches that kick out in excitement. And yes, I even love the smell. People often talk about that great baby smell that you get when taking a whiff of a freshly washed warm little baby head, but I prefer the little feet. For one thing, there are two … Continue reading

Keeping Baby Teeth

Here at the Romans family home, we have been experiencing a new milestone. My first born is now old enough to start losing his teeth. This has been an exciting time here. The bottom two teeth are now gone, off in tooth fairy land, traded for two shiny gold dollar coins. But it has me wondering, is it worth storing those baby teeth for years to come? I admit that I am torn. My husband thinks that it is pretty gross to save these teeth. This was said by the man who religiously kept almost every bloody band aid from … Continue reading

Dear Heather … Baby Wants to Get her Back, Back

Dear Heather How do I get rid of back fat? It’s a seriously annoying problem that I’ve had since the birth of my third child. I didn’t experience the same problem with my first two children. It’s very frustrating for me, many tops that I enjoyed wearing before look bad now and some of my sleeved shirts don’t fit correctly, I know it’s because of the bulges around my upper back and around the bra straps. Can you help? – Diane Dear Diane, Back fat. It’s an insidious and awful enemy for most women and it’s also one of the … Continue reading

Does Your Baby Snack All Day?

When my daughter was younger, my husband worked very long hours and since I was a stay at home mom, going to school part time and spending the majority of my time with her – I used to let her eat on demand. I did this when she was nursing, drinking bottles and finally when she was on solids. I received a lot of well-meaning advice from people that said I needed to set her on a rigid feeding schedule – but the one thing I knew about my daughter is that I could schedule our days pretty well – … Continue reading

A Day of Being You

Today was Mother’s Day. A nice holiday in and of itself but we mothers do not take full advantage of it. It’s the one day of the year we can ask our families to do anything for us, and they have to do it. It’s the holiday law. I should have written this post last week to give you time to make a list of all the things you would like your family to do for you. Forget flowers and breakfast in bed, I just want someone else to be me for the day. If you can get your family … Continue reading

Introducing the Tooth Fairy

My toddler is only three. She’s been going to the dentist since her first birthday. I don’t want to think about her losing teeth. She’s so little. I didn’t start losing teeth until I was seven. Children typically start losing teeth around age six or seven. Jessie has a ways to go, which is a relief. Jessie’s school is holding an assembly today for the Pre-K through second grade children. The tooth fairy is going to make an appearance. I don’t know what the presentation is going to be; I wish I could be there for it. I hope Jessie … Continue reading

How Much Sleep Should Your Preschooler Get?

Recently, I read an article on sleep. In this article, researchers studied the brains of adults who had not slept well for a week. The adults thought that they were doing fine, and they thought that their judgment was not impaired. However, when they took a test, they discovered that they were actually impaired to the point that their brains functioned as if they’d had a few too many drinks. They were not fit to drive or to function, but these adults thought that they were doing all right. The same went for children. The researchers instructed intermediate-aged children to … Continue reading
