Clean Up Strategies

It’s funny to me how when I ask my 4-year old to clean her room, I get a plethora of excuses. There is crying, throwing herself down on the floor, protesting with the famous, “I’m too tired!” or “I can’t do it by myself, I need help!” But, when I need to fold the laundry, or unload the dishwasher, she is right by my side saying, “Mommy, Can I help?” I’ve wondered what the difference is. Work is work right? Well, at this age, they seem to know the difference. I will simply ask my daughter to pick up her … Continue reading

Tips in the Kitchen 3

Don’t you just love it when you find a tip that makes your time in the kitchen so much better? I’ve been sharing some of my best kitchen-related tips and strategies. While melting chocolate in a microwave can be more convenient than using a double boiler, it can quickly become a disaster. Chocolate burns easily. To help reduce the chances of this happening to your chocolate, use a clear glass bowl that will allow you to see the progress of the chocolate in the microwave. Heat it in 30-second intervals, and always stir it between heating times. Sometimes what looks … Continue reading

Home Chore List: Twice-A-Year Cleaning Chores (1)

We might have a tendency to ignore or put off the twice-a-year chores, but getting them done will make a big difference in how your home looks and how clean it is. A good time to do these chores is once time each in the Fall and the Spring, when the weather should be cooperating. However, you can also adopt a four-time-a-year attitude by splitting the list in half and designating a time each time the season changes to get some of the chores done, fall, winter, spring summer. But I would rather get them all over with, if possible. … Continue reading

Some Guest Cleanup Strategies

For everything in life there is a plan and cleaning up after your guests leave is no exception. But you do have to think about it: what to do first, for example, after you decide to move rather than face it. Here are some thoughts about how to tackle the mess right after your guests leave, or at least a big part of it. Do as much as possible the moment your guests have pulled out of your driveway on their way down the road to bother other unsuspecting relatives. Even if you are dead tired, most messes will look … Continue reading

Time Saving Tips to Keep You on Track

With the holidays fast approaching, things might be getting a little busy around your house. Some people are able to back off a little bit from their home based businesses during the holiday season and focus on holiday activities. People with seasonal home based businesses are likely to be putting in as much time and effort as they can right now. Either way, you are likely to be feeling a little bit crunched for time. Of course, there are only so many hours in a day. While we can not create additional hours, we can employ a few strategies to … Continue reading

The Flylady Way

Since I’m new to this house keeping blog I decided to start with my favorite way to get my house in shape- Flylady! If, like me, you tend to procrastinate and create more work for yourself when cleaning then you really need to check out Flylady’s website. First of all, she’s funny, has a huge heart and can make things happen. First of all, Flylady eases you into it; she sends you a welcome email and little things to do to start developing a routine. When I first started doing Flylady, being the impatient perfectionist I am, I was quite … Continue reading

Comparing Mops

When Swiffer introduced its WetJet mops to the world I didn’t waste any time adding it to my mop collection. Yes, collection. Over the years I have accumulated a series of mops, each touting itself as the “latest” and “greatest” cleaning tool. Swiffer’s WetJet kit features a dual-nozzle sprayer, which emits a solution designed to “break up and dissolve tough messes.” However, it was its ad line about being “smarter than a mop and bucket,” that prompted me to give it a try. Like many homeowners, who can’t afford to hire help to clean their floors, I don’t exactly enjoy … Continue reading

Here are some strategies for keeping up with the housework when you have a baby. Baby Wearing Housework can be pretty entertaining for your baby when he has front row seats. Strap him on with a sling or carrier and do activities that do not require too much bending over. Hanging clothes, vacuuming and going through mail are a few things that are easy … Continue reading

Compulsive Hoarding-Part 3

In the third part of Compulsive Hoarding, I would like to discuss the strategies we employed in our attempt to positively retrain Daniel in his obsessive behaviors beyond the kitchen and his food issues. Medications are available for the treatment of obsessive behavior. Because the symptoms are usually included in the categories of Attachment Disorder and Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, some physicians prescribe meds (used to treat these specific disorders) to assist in minimizing the symptoms. Paul and I declined this resource of treatment. We felt in the beginning, and still maintain the logic, Daniel’s compulsive behavior was due to his circumstances … Continue reading

Marjorie, Michele, and I have been busy discussing lots of different issues. Marjorie is keeping all of us on our toes with more great tips for entertaining. She’s even tackled the tough issues, like getting ready for guests, in “The Guest Bathroom: Scary Stuff!” and then discussed how guests might be tempted to overstay their welcome in “Don’t Be TOO Nice … Continue reading
