Liven Up Your Walls

If you still have bare walls after a move, or if you want to give a space an update, you can do so without becoming an artist or spending a fortune on pricey artwork. These simple methods will help you create some interest without a lot of time, money, or effort.

Create a unique grouping of pictures, such as an L shape. The easiest way to do this is to lay the picture frames you intend to use out on large piece of paper and trace them. Hang the paper on the wall, make sure it's level, and place nail holes in the appropriate places. Remove the paper and hang the pictures.

You can collect different types of frames from around the house, or if you don't have an assortment of frames, look for some interesting styles at an antique shop or select several different styles from a discount store to create an eclectic mix. If you don't have anything to place inside the frames, use photographs, art from calendars, the front covers of pretty greeting cards, or even pictures from glossy magazines.

Another idea that works well in a small area that just needs a little something is to choose from two to four frames that are alike. They should be larger than the images you intend to use and should incorporate thick matting. The matting can match or you can select different colors or textures for each frame. Hang them up and down instead of side to side, hanging the top frame just above eye level.

An interesting look that works especially well in small rooms is hanging several different styles of smallish mirrors in a grouping. Follow the instructions above for creating a layout and for proper nail placement. The mirrors will add interest but they will also reflect light, making the space feel larger.

I love the hanging the paper and placing the nails suggestion! I still have a bare naked basement family room that I am wanting to make more homey. Thanks for the tip!

I'm glad you like the ideas and I hope some of them will work for you. :o) I've seen the mirror one done in photos and at a friend's and it is really interesting and charming. I'm thinking of trying a small grouping of mirrors here.
