Location, Location, Location

Does where you live affect how you parent? NBC News recently ran a story about moms and dads dubbed “super commuters.” According to the peacock network, the title is bestowed upon a growing number of Americans who live in one city and are forced to travel extreme distances to work in another. In the Nightly News piece, one dad shared his story of spending nearly four hours behind the wheel a day, putting 1,000 miles a week on his car, and forking over $450 for gas per month. All so that his four children can remain in the same home … Continue reading

Location, Location, Location

In real estate, it’s all about location. However, photographers have to be just as concerned about where they set-up for a shoot if they want to get the most bang for their buck. For example, if you are planning to snap photos indoors you’ll want to be careful not to place your subject directly in front of a window. Doing so will likely wash out the shot or cause unwanted shadows. In addition, take a look around before pressing down on your camera’ shutter button. It’s important to eliminate background distractions. Also, be sure that you don’t have your subject … Continue reading

Animal Relocation Initiative

My dog Chihiro was born in Arkansas. It might have been a bit of a head-scratcher how a young puppy made it across several states in order to be adopted from a shelter in the Washington, DC area before she turned four months old. I wasn’t perplexed, however, because before I even found my dog I was already familiar with the concept of rescue transport. When I lived in Baltimore I roomed for a while with a friend who loves Dachshunds. She adores the breed so much that she’s very active with the Coast to Coast Dachshund rescue group. One … Continue reading

Why You Should Scope Out Your Location

I got the biggest compliment at a shoot this past week. The family remarked, “wow, it’s nice that you know exactly where you want to take the photos already; this is going so fast!” We went from once location to the next without a hitch. There was no wandering around searching for the perfect light. The reason? I had scoped out the location 20 minutes before they arrived and I had already found the perfect spots. It’s easy to scope out your location when there is no pressure. When you spend just 15-20 minutes looking around on your own, without … Continue reading

Choosing a Location for Your Portraits

Are you looking for the perfect place to take family photos? There are many factors to consider when scoping out a location for a portrait session. The right background is essential for the perfect photo. You want it to be beautiful, while still reserving the spotlight for your subject. You want it to be interesting, without becoming a distraction. The first thing to consider is the color. Sometimes people have a tendency to pose in front of a flower garden because it’s beautiful, but if there are too many different colors, the background becomes too busy and draws attention away … Continue reading

Hawaiian Location for Fourth “Pirates” Film

My second and final Hawaii week installment has Disney promising a swashbuckling adventure in Hawaii’s tropical paradise. Executives at Disney have announced that the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie will be filmed in Hawaii. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will begin filming this summer on Oahu and Kauai. It’s slated for release in 2011, likely in the summer. Few details are known yet for “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” The movie is a confirmed adaptation, in places, of the 1988 historical fantasy novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers. The main plot point in the … Continue reading

Location Has a Bearing on Health Care

Different regions of the world — or even of a particular country — tend to have different types of health problems and health care strengths and weaknesses. Look at the United States, for example. The Midwest and the South tend to have the highest rates of morbid obesity in the nation. The Northeast is known for female-friendly care: women get more frequent Pap smears and mammograms there than in the rest of the country. So how does location affect the care you get (and the money you spend on health care)? Studies from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center took a look at … Continue reading
