Insurance Blog Week in Review – Week of March 4 – 11, 2012

Each and every week, there can be anywhere between twelve and fourteen different blogs appearing on the Insurance Blog. Keeping up with the Insurance Blog is a good way to stay informed about insurance changes that can affect your family. Use the Week in Review is a quick way to “ketchup”! Examining a Potential Health Insurance Plan I am, once again, attempting to find an affordable health insurance policy. In this blog, I go over what some of the abbreviations, phrases, and numbers in the health plan I am looking at actually mean. The Insurance Podcast Roundup went up on … Continue reading

The 13 Nights of Halloween

Forget about drummers drumming, pipers piping, maids a milking and turtle doves. It’s Halloween, so bring on the marching mutants, dancing demons and singing skulls. All the dastardly icons of the candy-collecting holiday are on display for your viewing pleasure in debut author-illustrator Guy Vasilovich’s vibrant picture book, The 13 Nights of Halloween. The entire tale is can be sung to the tune of “The 12 Days of Christmas,” but that’s where the similarities end. There is no true love gifting foreign birds and golden rings in this book. Rather, Vasilovich counts down to Halloween by having a mummy present … Continue reading

Magnifying Fall

At the nature center where I work, we have an Elmo. Unlike his Sesame Street namesake, Elmo is not an assuming presence. He’s a small machine, and rather gray. However, when you turn on the switch, Elmo turns kids on to nature. He’s a macroscope. What is a macroscope? Like a hand lens, it magnifies objects that are hard to see with the naked eye. Like a microscope, it’s a machine to assist your eyes in seeing things that are not necessarily noticeable with your eyes. Our Elmo also projects items onto a screen, so worms look as large as … Continue reading

Fall Crafts For Kids

Once the days start getting shorter and there is a chill in the air the kids will be spending more time inside. It only takes a day or two for them to get bored of their toys and TV and start saying they are bored. It’s time to find some ways to entertain them. As a single mother I’m always looking for inexpensive things to do with Hailey, things that will keep her busy and allow us to spend time together doing something besides watch television. Fall really does lend itself to all sorts of inexpensive craft ideas. Just grab … Continue reading

So Much for Early Birds

With all the hype surrounding holiday airfares, I followed the experts’ advice and started researching prices for Christmas flights back in September. Turns out I wasted a ton of time because now those same so-called experts have decided to change their tune. Last week, travel “insiders” went on the record saying that people looking to take flights later this month will likely be treated to the same fares as individuals who booked and paid for tickets in September, October and November. So, apparently, it doesn’t pay to be an early bird this season. While fares are higher than last year, … Continue reading

Making Money with Fun Halloween Costumes

I am astounded by the amount of money you can make just by sporting a unique Halloween costume. Practically every TV morning show based in New York offers amazing prizes for people willing to parade in front of the cameras wearing a one-of-a-kind costume creation. Even if you don’t live near the “Today” show or “Live with Regis and Kelly” studios, you can still score a nice chunk of change by dressing up in your Halloween best at local venues. For example, in the tiny town I live in, a local bar/lounge/nightclub is offering $1,000 to the person who dons … Continue reading

A Craft for the Birds

If you’re feeling trapped indoors without any spring in sight, creating spring crafts will help you see the coming light and green that is just around the corner. Soon, the birds will be singing their spring songs and building their nests. Building a bird house is a big project, but lots of fun. There are online birdhouse kits available at stores like The Bird House Depot if you and your preschooler would like to try hammering some nails. If you’re looking for a shorter project to keep you and your preschooler thinking about spring, try creating a bag of nest … Continue reading

All Aboard for Holiday Fun

For my train-loving 3-year-old nephew, Christmas is simply not complete without a ride on the “Polar Express.” Fortunately, “Polar Express” experiences are running in various cities throughout country right now, including one near my nephew’s home. At last count, no less than 30 different railroad locations were offering “Polar Express” rides for kids of all ages who are enchanted by the classic book and movie of the same name. If your family is looking for a memorable Christmas adventure, you should seriously consider hopping aboard a local “Polar Express.” The seasonal rides recreate the book’s magic of finding the spirit … Continue reading
