Make your own Summer Accessories

There is a great variety of summertime accessories to dress up your home. Some of these items have hefty price tags, but you can make your own decorative pieces that will work just as well.

Your vacation items can be a great source for summer accessories. Vacation photos add a nice personal touch. A smattering of photos from several years' worth of vacations will not only add some fun but will also inspire discussion of fond family memories.

What about those seashells you or the kids have collected? They make great decorative pieces for side tables and or the coffee table. Clean them well and try placing a large one on a clear glass plate then fill a clear glass bowl with small ones. Smooth glass will work best since the shells are textured.

Tiny seashells can be glued onto other items. Try an old coaster or a small square of wood. A piece like this can be added to the suggestion above to round out your grouping, since many people like to use at least three pieces.

Here's a fun idea if you're in the mood for a project. Pick up some inexpensive items at a discount store or thrift shop. Paint each item in a neutral color and while still wet, dip or roll in clean sand. What better way to bring the beach indoors? You can also pick up textured spray paint in sand or stone finish.

To help keep the sand or paint in place, it's a good idea to add a clear protective coat when each item is thoroughly dry. These accessories can be used for many summers to come. These options work on vases, picture frames, and more.

Probably the simplest option is filling a clear vase or bowl with fresh flowers. If you have some in your garden, even better. If not, opt for flowers that last the longest such as sunflowers, certain wildflowers, or carnations. Change the water frequently to keep them fresher longer.
