Search for a New Bathroom at Lowe’s

Yesterday, Sunday, my family and I spent hours in our local Lowe’s home improvement store searching for a new bathroom vanity for our downstairs powder room. In fact, we have to redo the whole bathroom. Right now, it contains a cheap blue carpet (ew carpet in the bathroom) that the previous owners used to hide the water damage to the sub floor beneath. The current sink itself is not bad, with the exception of years of hard water stains that bleach and a pumice stone have not completely eliminated. However, the sink is just attached to the wall, and the … Continue reading

Matching Kitchen and Bathroom

One recent trend in home renovation and design that I have been seeing lately is the matching of kitchen and bathroom to create a sense of continuity in the home. This idea expands on the modern sense of open space in a home, with wide open areas and a sense of flow throughout the home. In the past, kitchens and bathrooms were treated as separate islands in the home. They were functional spaces that were often isolated from the rest of the home. A bathroom might feature colors, such as bright pink, or a kitchen bright yellow, that you would … Continue reading

Secret Sources of Free and Low Cost Paint

While painting is a relatively inexpensive way to improve your home, the price of paint and supplies can really add up. However, there are a couple of frugal tricks to getting free and low cost paint. Ask Friends and Neighbors Chances are, there are plenty of garages all over your neighborhood where paint is hiding. Primer, interior paint and exterior paint, it is all there. Most people are only too happy to pass it on to someone who will use it. People tend to overbuy paint because they are afraid they will run out. They don’t realize that with computer … Continue reading

Cut the Cost of Your Window Treatments In Half

I had my living room and dining room painted this weekend and realized that my old window treatments would not work. Because the rooms are directly across from each other and painted two dramatically different colors, I would need the window treatments to be cohesive to balance out the stark contrast. I found a window treatment set that had the colors of both rooms in the pattern, and fell in love with them. The problem was that if I purchased 4 sets, it would cost far more than I had budgeted for them. After staring at the curtains for a … Continue reading

Time to Clean Out the Medicine Cabinet

It seems as though most of the people I know are dropping like flies to the flu or other respiratory illness right now. Whether it is the dreaded swine flu or the usual seasonal flu, the fact that everyone around us seems to be affected right now makes the whole thing hit home. I know, despite trying to deny it to myself, that at some point my own family may be affected. As much as I would like to sometimes place them in a bubble, there are those things called school and work, not to mention social activities. With this … Continue reading

“Cocooning” Phenomena Leads to New Home Trends

“Cocooning” is a national phenomena, according to an article written for a national real estate magazine. People are more inclined to stay home and surround themselves with all forms of security and comfort. This isn’t surprising, given the recent events over the last few years, with terrorist threats, war, issues with travel and a tough economy. When we are home, we can de-stress and shut out the rest of the world. This being close to home in comfort phenomena has sparked some pretty interesting home trends. Let’s take a look. Inside Out There is a large trend of indoor to … Continue reading

Mixing Things Up for a One of a Kind Look

While following the current trends is the way many people like to go when decorating their homes, using trendy items doesn’t mean your spaces have to look like everyone else’s do. One good way to make sure your look is unique while still being up to date, is to use items differently than their intended purposes. One example is using a desk set in an eating area. It might sound rather unusual, but replacing a napkin holder with a very similar desk sorter can add interest to the dining room or kitchen. A matching cylindrical pencil holder can be used … Continue reading

Does it Feel Like Christmas at Your House?

It is definitely starting to feel more like Christmas around here, especially now that we have a few more presents under the tree. Whew! I was getting nervous. There are only 15 days left and there were only a few lonely gifts peeking out. My husband and I did some shopping yesterday and crossed a few more items off our list. We got some great deals. I’ll be wrapping the latest gifts and putting them under the tree while the kids are at school Monday. My husband and I were worn out after shopping, but it was fun spending the … Continue reading
