Dress up your dining room without breaking your back or busting your budget. Try the ideas in Start Decorating the Dining Room or check out some of these ideas:

Add Layers of Rich Color

If you have a neutral backdrop, and you would really like to add some color without changing too much, simply layer the color in your treatments. Add a rich red or burnt orange tablecloth to your table instead of the pristine white one. You can angle the white one on top or add a layer of lace through which the color can show. Atop the lace, add another layer of color by adding place-mats, a table runner, or linen napkins in another shade.

Flooring Options

If you have gorgeous hardwood floors but want to add some interest to the floor and anchor your dining table and chairs, add a terrific area rug. This is also a good way to bring more interest into a rather plain space. If you currently have solid colored window treatments, walls, etc. try a print or textured rug to spice things up. Add a few accessories to the space in colors pulled from the new area rug. A great way to get an area rug for less is to shop carpet stores for remnants. Even after having the edges bound, it's a very affordable alternative and will change the look of your dining room.

Replace Existing Dinnerware

New dishes and serving pieces can make a huge difference in the look and feel of your dining room. Not only will they change the look but they will inspire you when setting the table and dressing the room. Build on the new place settings when choosing other accessories. On the other hand, you could choose accessories such as napkin rings that will make the new dishes really pop.
