More Fire Prevention Tips

Do you know all of the ways to prevent a fire from consuming your home or taking your life? Home fires can be absolutely devastating. A little knowledge know could prevent a real tragedy later. Many of these tips were suggested by State Farm Insurance.

Here are some more tips on preventing fire and fire-related injury in the home.

You might have heard of spontaneous combustion. Believe it or not, this is a very real hazard and can caused a fire in your home. To prevent spontaneous combustion, do not let oily or greasy rags collect. Even paint covered rags can be a hazard. Place your soiled rags in a metal container and place the container outside and away from your home until you can dispose of them properly through your town's hazardous waste program.

If your power goes out, it may seem logical and even romantic to reach for candles. But candles cause many fires in the home, especially during power outs when they are being carried from room to room. Candles are especially dangerous when used to light attics, basements and closets. Keep flashlights or battery powered lanterns available.

Everyone knows that homes should have working smoke detectors. But do you know the guidelines of how many smoke detectors you need or where to place them in your home? Each floor should have its own smoke detector, and that includes the basement. Additional smoke detectors should be placed within 15 feet of all bedrooms or rooms where people sleep. This will give you the best protection, and is actually the law in some states.

Keep fire and local emergency numbers posted near your phone. You would be surprised how in times of panic or stress you might forget what these numbers are or even how to dial 911. Teach children how to dial the phone for help.
