Prepping for Fluffy’s Holiday Photo

It took working at Families.com for nearly a year before I got my first taste of the term “Fur Baby.” The very first time I saw the words featured in a blog I thought the writer was referring to this. Then, I took a closer look and realized that it was “Fur Baby,” not “Furby.” It didn’t take long to deduce that the blogger loved her four-legged “kids” as much as her two-legged ones. In fact, I became friends with said writer, and the following Christmas I received a hilarious photo card with her furry kids sitting on the laps … Continue reading

Gifts for Single Parents

Am I late or is everyone else still Christmas shopping? I always promise myself I’ll be done by now, but I always end up with lots of last minute gifts to buy. Some people are so much harder to buy for than others, like my Dad, what can he possibly need? I try to get thoughtful gifts, something people wouldn’t get for themselves but in this post I’m going to give you ideas for single moms and dads. As a single mother the gift I needed most all year long was time, there was never enough of it. It’s hard … Continue reading

Snapping Sensational Snow Shots

I survived the Blizzard of 2010! I didn’t get a t-shirt; rather, I was gifted with roughly 14 inches of snow and 45 mph winds that created five-foot tall snowdrifts smack in front of our garage. In my opinion, snow in excess of three inches is not pretty to look at unless you are staring at it from inside a warm house… and you have someone else shoveling it from your sidewalk. I laughed when my mom, who called from Hawaii, asked if I had taken pictures of my daughter frolicking in the winter wonderland. HA! Frolic is far from … Continue reading

Preparing for Winter Photo Shoots

The weather outside is frightful, at least in Wisconsin. We have more than a foot of snow on the ground and relentless winds that are whipping around at 35 mph. It’s a true winter wonderland out there and would make for a gorgeous backdrop for a Christmas greeting card photo. However, braving the elements to take winter-themed pictures is not exactly high on my to-do list right now. However, in a few days I may change my tune. Frosty’s home does yield fantastic snow shots. The trick is making sure you and your equipment are protected from the harsh winter … Continue reading

How to Spice Up Your Holiday Party

Tired of the same ol’, same ol’ Christmas parties that feature tone-deaf Uncle Jack singing karaoke in the corner and Aunt Lucy forcing you to try her latest tofu creation? Then, consider hosting your own holiday fiesta this season with a spicy theme. If you don’t want to go whole hog by hosting an extravagant costume night (think elves, reindeer and Christmas movie characters), then go simple by decorating in a single color and having guests dress in red and green. Other theme options include: Hawaiian Christmas I was born and raised in Hawaii, and while we don’t typically greet … Continue reading

Christmas Shopping for a Tripod

Yesterday I spent way too much time shopping online for a new tripod. Not for me; rather, one of our family’s dearest friends, who happens to be new to the world of hobby photography, mentioned that he was looking to purchase a tripod. Since I am a huge advocate of camera tripods, I convinced a bunch of other friends to help chip in to purchase our hard-working-always-there-when-you-need-him-but-never-requests-or-accepts-payment-for-help-provided pal an invaluable photo tool for Christmas. There’s no arguing that a tripod is a worthwhile investment that will last for decades provided you care for it properly. However, well-made tripods don’t come … Continue reading

Fun Christmas Bling

Who can resist a bit of bling around the holidays? I am not a flashy person, but when I saw Martha Stewart’s latest Christmas creation I stopped dead in my tracks. I actually turned off my vacuum and turned all of my attention to the TV where a tree bedazzled with dozens of shiny beaded ornaments and garland stood like a beacon of beaded glory. There’s no way I have the time, talent or budget to recreate Martha’s beaded masterpieces; however, I did some research online and found a few cheaper and affordable alternatives that can be made by people … Continue reading

Photographing Your Holiday Meals

Once I made a Chili Cornbread Casserole that came out so incredibly perfect that I actually took a photo of it. Sound nerdy? Not so much, considering I also made my boyfriend at the time take a photo of me holding the casserole… in my apron… and chef’s hat. Now that’s nerdy. Photographing food is not that unusual, especially if you are gourmet cook. However, getting your photos to come out as well as your delectable dish may not be as easy. If you are looking to take photos of lavish holiday meals to showcase in a scrapbook, or you … Continue reading

Avoiding the Christmas Photo Card Conundrum

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. I often think of those timeless phrases this time of year when the clock is ticking down to my self-imposed Christmas card deadline. Whereas I love thinking of new and creative ways to pose my child in what I hope will be a unique photo card, the process of snapping the keeper just about kills me every year. No one wants to go through the trouble of cleaning up a kid, getting him dressed in his Sunday best and bribing him to no end to smile for the … Continue reading

Ways to Spice Up Your Holiday Photos

Tired of taking the same boring holiday photos of your kids standing like statues in front of the Christmas tree? Then, add a little spice to your to seasonal shots by incorporating some of these creative ideas: Boxes: Get an extra large gift box, wrap it, and then fill it with brightly-colored tissue paper. Then, place your newborn in the box and have your older kids hold the box top to reveal the “gift” of a baby sister or brother. Beach: This is a great idea for families who live in warm climates, such as Hawaii or Florida. Instead of … Continue reading
