Mouse Hunt!

What happens when you combine a former city chick who has seen rats the size of small cats, a handy husband that is surviving on too little sleep and a mysterious “something” with an appetite for a 45-year-old house in the woods? Chaos, I tell you, chaos. When I last left off, I was telling you about our adventures with a mystery rodent. Let’s call it Godzilla, so you don’t confuse it with that cute little epicures mouse in Ratatouille. Better yet, let’s call it the ROUS (rodent of unusual size); with teeth. (If you missed the early part of … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Lisa Pietsch!

As the former Community Manager, Lisa was the first person I met when I became acquainted with Families.com, and has become a good friend. Lisa, how fun to interview you today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? I’ve been with Families.com since September 26th, 2005. I believe we had about twenty-six members back then. When they launched the blogs here in early December 2005, they hired me for all three topics as well as the position of Community Manager. Eventually, … Continue reading

The 1990s version of the Mickey Mouse Club introduced such luminaries as Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and Britney Spears. While reporters and casting agents may be marveling at the massive pool of talent provided by the … Continue reading

Sumo Mouse – David Wisniewski

I spend a lot of time reading titles as I select which books to bring home from the library. This title made me laugh out loud, something you shouldn’t do in the library, but can you blame me? “Sumo Mouse!” With bright and colorful illustrations provided by the author, this children’s picture book is written like a melodramatic comic book with a hint of the old Godzilla movies thrown in for good measure. “Sumo Mouse” is the story of Tokyo besieged. All the mice have been stolen by evil cats and are captives at the Tanaka Toy Factory. They are … Continue reading

Feline Hunting Games

Cats are hunters by nature. Where dogs chase and overcome prey, cats wait, stalk, and pounce. Cats rarely miss their prey; they wait for the right moment to strike, when victory is almost assured. There are many ways to stimulate your cat’s hunting instincts through play. A cat has several different stances or body positions for hunting and play hunting. Mousing: a low to the ground stalk, followed by a pounce or a one-paw scoop Birding: an upward scooping motion, with toes spread and claws out Fishing: a downward scooping motion, with the paw bent like a hook and claws … Continue reading

Rare Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Cartoon Discovered

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit has been getting more attention lately than he’s had in over 50 years. Now that the Disney Company bought him back so he could have a major role in the “Epic Mickey” video game, one could say this is the best Oswald’s career has been since its start. It’s fitting, then, that one of the early shorts featuring him has just been discovered in a film archive in the United Kingdom. The Reuters news agency reports that employees from Huntley Film Archives, one of the U.K.’s largest, discovered the old cartoon this year when doing a … Continue reading

Dog + Donut = Delightful Read

If you give a dog a donut… you might end up with a nasty stain on your carpet. Digging for Discounts

Living near an outlet mall is a double-edged word. Whereas I love that I am so close to stores that offer daily deals on new items, if I don’t exercise will power, I can easily spend a ton of money scooping up sale merchandise. Fortunately, you don’t have to live next to an outlet mall or warehouse store to save money on clothes, footwear, or household items. Savvy shoppers know exactly where to go to bargain hunt. Thrift, consignment, and resale stores are a frugalista’s dream. These types of shops carry “gently used” or “like new” items at deeply discounted … Continue reading
